What a scene! The poor man was being clutched by the tentacles with their suckers and waved about in the air. He was half dead and choking, but he managed to shout, “Help! Help!” I was astounded to hear these words uttered in French! So I had a compatriot on board, perhaps several! All my life I shall hear this heartrending cry.

The poor man was done for. Who could save him from such a powerful grip? Nevertheless, Captain Nemo hurled himself at the squid, and with one blow of his ax cut off yet another arm. The first mate struggled furiously with other monsters which were climbing up the sides of the Nautilus. The crew were flailing away with their axes. Ned, Conseil and I also dug our weapons into their soft bodies. A violent odor of musk filled the air. It was horrible.

For a moment I thought the poor man entangled in the squid would be saved from its powerful suckers Seven of its eight arms had been cut. Only one—brandishing the victim like a feather—still writhed about in the air. But just as Captain Nemo and the first mate rushed at it, the animal let out a jet of black ink. We were blinded by it. When the cloud of spray had cleared away, the squid had disappeared, and with it my unfortunate compatriot!
