BREAKING: House GOP Dumps Jordan [UPDATED: Emmer May Be the New Hot Pick] [1]

Political Wire adds that the House has adjourned for the weekend and will try again to pick a candidate on Monday night. No word yet if any of them will reach out to Democrats.

WaPo has just picked up the news. They also had this little gem:

Referring to Jordan, Gaetz said, “The most popular Republican in the United States Congress was just knifed by a secret ballot, in a private meeting in the basement of the Capitol. It’s as swampy as swamp gets. And Jim Jordan deserves better than that.”

This, from the person who is despised by everyone for getting them into this mess in the first place. And calling Jordan “the most popular Republican” has got to go down in history as one of the most laughable lies Gaetz has told (and there is a lot of competition for that title!).

CNN has a bit more:

Quoting the former Squeaker:

“And really it's astonishing to me, and we’re in a very bad position as a party,” [McCarthy] said. “I’m concerned about where we go from here."

Well, duh!

And another Congresscrirtter™ :

"We're back to square one" GOP Dusty Johnson told CNN. Johnson said the ideal candidate is someone who is not at all interested in the job.

because it will likely be the last job that person will have in politics, Johnson added.

Punchbowl is reporting that Rep. Emmer is new front runner:

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is the frontrunner in a massive field of candidates for speaker now that the House Republican Conference has ousted Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as their speaker designate. Emmer nabbed an important endorsement right out of the gate. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy told us Friday afternoon that Emmer is “the right person for the job. He can unite the conference. He understands the dynamics of the conference. He also understands what it takes to win and keep a majority.”

BUT . . .

Since we broke the Emmer news, we’ve gotten a number of calls from sources associated with former President Donald Trump’s orbit saying they will try to derail Emmer’s candidacy.

Why the Orange Menace is opposed to Emmer wasn’t stated, but I suspect Emmer’s vote to certify Biden’s election may have something to do with it. This is from TIME two weeks ago, when Emmer was looking to be House majority leader:
