Gaza: Church of St Porphyrius Bombed [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-20 Orthodox church says it was hit by Israeli air strike in Gaza GAZA, Oct 20 (Reuters) - A Greek Orthodox church in the Gaza Strip which was sheltering hundreds of displaced Palestinians was hit overnight by an Israeli air strike, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem said, and Palestinian health officials said 16 people were killed. There was no word from the Church on a death toll. The Israeli military said a part of the church was damaged in a strike on a militant command centre and it was reviewing the incident. The latest casualties being reported are 20 dead and 30+ injured.[TBC] This is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world [about 1000 members] and the foundations are from around 495AD. [Present Foundations extended by The 1st Crusaders?] The Israeli government/military is claiming Hamas was using this church.[TBC] The Orthodox Church has denied this, they say there were mainly women and children sheltering there believing of all the places in Gaza this was the safest place. They believe their community will leave Gaza for good [when allowed] as their place of worship is so damaged. The Church of St Porphyrius was once the main center for Christians in Southern Israel. Architecturally and historically it is a crying shame. *TBC to be checked as I heard it on the radio.
