The Cult of Dominoes is Falling [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-20 With all the hemming and hawing about Georgia’s Attorney General Fani Willis’ pretrial strategy—indicting 19 defendants at once—the second of the dominoes fell yesterday. Bail bondsman Scott G. Hall was the first defendant to enter a guilty plea in September, and then there were eighteen. Today, former Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro’s jury selection starts with reports of a plea offer for his testimony wafting through the judicial breeze. Yesterday, another Trump attorney, Sidney Powell—maybe on advice from her headless informant, decided her best option to avoid jail was to enter a guilty plea, write a letter of apology to the citizenry of Georgia, pay a fine/restitution, and most importantly agreed to testify against the now 16 others involved in the alleged fraud, including Donald Trump. Those in the know had predicted that Willis’s strategy, all along, was to whittle down the defendants by offering a first-flip, first-serve strategy. The easiest thing to do would be to make a joke about the Chesebro slipping off the promised Kraken to be released by Powell. As simple as it would be to smile and pass these cultists off as unworthy of the briefs they file or wear, they attempted to dismantle over 200 years of democracy to create an authoritarian regime. One of them [Jim Jordan] is currently running to be the third most powerful person in the world. Republicans will genuflect at the words of Ronald Reagan, calling America the “shining city on the hill.” In the interval, the GOP promise of a bright light has become a soft flicker while Democrats fight to keep the lights on. Most conspiracy theories are self-serving exercises in irrationality. From the time Republicans labeled FDR a socialist for wanting to provide financial security to the elderly and safeguard bank deposits to Truman integrating the modern military, the GOP and Dixiecrats have looked for ways to turn decency and altruism into something insidious. Republicans still look to blame Lyndon Johnson’s war on poverty for society’s ills. The fight by the Grand Old Party to destroy Medicare and Medicaid has become Republican orthodoxy. Every Democratic President since Bill Clinton has had to bear the accusation of some imagined scandal by the GOP from Whitewater, a tan suit, and, in the case of Joe Biden, loving his son too much. The basis for all the sturm and drang by Republicans has not been to save the Republic as with the two impeachments of Donald Trump but to soothe anger and seek revenge. Just today, when Jim Jordan, who seeks to lead the House of Representatives, was asked if Joe Biden won the election, his answer was the usual verbal dance of tapping and waltzing around the truth. “I think there were all kinds of problems with the 2020 election. I’ve been clear about that,” Jordan said Friday morning, just hours before his third try at the Speakership. So, under 30 days before the next threat of a government shutdown, Israel and Ukraine are fighting to exist; meanwhile, the GOP-led House is deciding who they hate less among them. America is boiling in a pot of GOP uncertainty while they feed their base a diet of gruel consisting of discontent and treachery. Joe Biden ran to “restore the soul of America” and, along with the Democrats, is trying to save the soul of the free world. Note: 12:06 pm Eastern-10/20/23, Jim Jordan (R-OH) loses third vote for Speaker.
