Washington County, MD Circuit Court Judge Shot, Killed [1]

This is breaking news from the county in which I live. A Washington County, Maryland circuit court judge was shot in the driveway of his home, according to news reports, at around 8 PM last night. Rushed to hospital, but could not be saved.

The murder victim is Judge Andrew Wilkinson. Judges on this court are appointed by the governor or are elected, and serve fifteen year terms. The official biography of Judge Wilkinson indicates that he was born in Guam [suggesting a military family] and took his law degree at Emory, that he was active in coaching baseball and soccer, and that he was a member of one of the local Catholic parishes.

I do not know, nor do I care, what his politics were. He was ambushed, presumably while unarmed, and murdered, and he was a member of the judiciary at the local level. He had a wife and children, and was 52. Early reporting indicates that the judge presided over a divorce proceeding earlier in the day, on the day he was shot, and that police are searching for the now ex husband in that proceeding as a person of interest in connection with the murder.

I cannot flag comments to my own diary, so I am asking those who can to please flag any comments that celebrate this death in any way. This has happened where I live, and I see nothing to celebrate in any aspect of it whatsoever. That will not change for me regardless of what I may learn about the politics of the deceased.

I will provide updates to this diary as the situation unfolds. Out of an abundance of caution, the other judges in the 4th Circuit Court* have been provided security at this time. I do not plan to spend much time here today, as I am too shaken by this news. It is too close to home.
