Speaker Selection Tactic [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-21 These are unprecedented times; including in the Capital. The assumptions, conventions and even guardrails are mostly gone. The Dems might be able to pick the next speaker from the Republican candidates that get at least 5 votes for speaker. Imagine one of the Republican candidates for speaker (Mr. Y) is not a crank or an election denier and gets 8 votes. The Dems all vote for Jeffries. Before the gavel closes the voting, all 212 Dems go down to the well and change their votes for Mr. Y. He would be the new speaker. He is not guilty of colluding with the Dems, he was just lucky. The Dems could defend him from Gaetz if he moves to vacate the chair because Mr. Y will get all 212 Dems and a few R’s. On the other hand, Mr. Y would be vulnerable to a motion to vacate the chair by the Dems if he does not allow their bills onto the floor. I don’t see why this wouldn’t work. The discipline of the Dems gives them new opportunities. It’s temporary anyway. I expect Jeffries will be speaker in January 2025.
