the New Confederates and the Great Step Backwards [1]

Most people have not ever heard of the Articles of Confederation, which established the structure of the Federal Government for eight years following the end of our revolution from England. After this trial period we adopted the Constitutional government which we have had since then.

The Articles of Confederation were a failure, but it seems some far right activists are trying to reestablish this flop as our prevailing system of government.

The failings of the Articles were several, but one was most important: there was no enforced cooperation between the states so that we would function as a unified country. Each state was near autonomous, and the weakness of the Articles showed in several ways. There was no cooperation concerning highways which crossed from state to state, something we all take for granted now and which is essential for the type of economy we now have. Further, each state sought to protect its own narrow needs which led to tariff wars, mostly about agricultural commodities which were a main source of wealth in those days. Militias were formed and used to threaten neighboring states. The “United States” functioned much as the independent German Duchies which were collectively weak until they unified in 1871,

The misdirection, the histrionics, and the chaos we now see especially in the House of Representatives is part of the plan. These means are used to manufacture a phony incompetence in order to undermine the Federal Government and weaken it. The inability to choose a leader who does not want to burn down the House serves their purpose. The fact that that this one body is locked up paralyzes the whole Legislative branch. The Plan. These de-evolutionaries hope to throw to the states all the authority which the Constitution gives to our central government, and this they imagine would give them a greater level of control. The Articles of Confederation reestablished.

These agents of chaos are preaching weakness rather than strength, which would seem to be foolish, but there is a motive. These far right activists seem to have lost faith that they can win control of the federal government by legitimate means. They use voter suppression, gerrymandering, violence and threats of it, and spreading chaos in Washington to get their way. The attempt to establish a would-be god emperor in the White House is part of the plan. However, crouching behind them is the fact that the vast majority of American citizens repudiate them and their philosophy. However, losing elections does not convince them that their are on the wrong track; they merely double down and keep plowing forward.

These people care nothing about the lessons of history, nothing about the facts. They seem to have lost all moral sense. It’s not that they are incapable of good government, they just don’t believe in it. They aim to win and dominate no matter how much damage will be the result.

They must be defeated so thoroughly that they slink home with their tails between their legs.
