[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-22 Quid Pro Quo, Clarice One of my all-time favorite psychological/thriller horror movies is Silence of the Lambs. I worked in a theater when this film hit the screen in 1991 and watched it so many times that I was given the poster hanging outside near the entrance. I lost the poster (cry!) I kick myself every time I see the movie. Which I still do. I am even tryna talk my teen daughter into watching with me to share my love for the film. She is a horror buff, and Halloween is our favorite time of year. Still, she’s heard things and wants to be entirely prepared, LOL! As Halloween nears, I reflect on the film and the famed “quid pro quo” line, which is apropos when thinking about the legal ramifications of Citizens United . “quid pro quo” Wait—did his eyes change from blue to brown? Cooool! I put Hannibal’s big mug in my contest video for Equal Citizens (below), a competition co-sponsored by Jason Alexander, for two reasons: 1) it was my favorite line in the film because, for me, it was the most frightening outside of the liver/chianti thing 2) Citizens United opened the door for the cannibalization of the poor to feed the rich—and that shit has got to end. NOW! Super PAC Quid Pro Quo can be policed more effectively Equal Citizens is looking for a video explaining the legal error that may be used to end or amend Citizens United and get Big Money/Dark Money out of politics. After the Watergate scandal, the government wanted to find a way to fix corruption in Washington. For many, the 1976 Buckley vs. Valeo landmark case was the answer, as courts could extend protections against political bribery by limiting how much money donors could give to a campaign. In 2010, Citizens United upended this by claiming Political Action Committees would act as a buffer, preventing donors from giving money directly to candidates. Because of this buffer, there would be no reason for a limit on how much money could be spent. Yeah. I know. Super PAC be Super Dumb. Ask Menendez how that theory is going. All things considered, I didn’t think removing money from politics could be done until I ran into Wolf-PAC and Equal Citizens. Both are trying very different routes to reduce money's influence in politics—for good. For instance, Wolf-PAC is pursuing an Amendment 5 Convention to combat Citizens United while Equal Citizens is trying to use Buckley vs. Valeo to upend the protections currently given to Super PACs. I like Equal Citizen’s odds better. Below is the video I created for the contest. I’ll win 50K if they feel I did a good job explaining the constitutional error that created Citizens United in the first place. Please check it out, and if you think I did a fair job, feel free to like and comment. youtube.com/watch?v=Aijhg8wD2ZE… EQUAL CITIZENS: equalcitizens.us MY SUBSTACK: oneangryblackchick.substack.com/...
