Kitchen Table Kibitzing October 22, 2023 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-22 Tree Removal For the 40 years we were on the farm, I did most of the tree maintenance. Twice we had a professional for some massive trees, but they just cut them and let them fall. We cut them up for firewood and dragged all the brush to burn piles. Labor intensive, for sure. I cut what was required, and as rules changed in the cities I was bemused with the tree-cutting requirements, permissions, certifications, etc. that began to appear in the urban areas. Recently a willow tree developed a vertical split, such that one part would hit the house and the other part would smash our beautiful persimmon tree. My son strapped it to limit damage, and we set about to cut it. We did about half, cutting precariously from a ladder, and dragging the brush to burn piles. We wisely called a tree company which had great Yelp reviews. When they arrived, they had a huge cherry-picker, and they tied off high up on each branch, then 3 guys pulled on a long rope such that the branches landed safely. But this was not all. The foreman had proposed cutting down a huge Cypress tree which was theorically threatening our driveway, and the PG&E feeder wires. I was skeptical, and the bid was high, but I approved. This tree was about 6 feet in diameter at the base. I could hardly believe it could be taken down. Note the size of their big truck. From cleverly tied ropes, they limbed the whole tree, Each giant branch fell precisely where they wanted. They brought in the giant cherry-picker for the last two branches, then dropped the massive trunk in 10 foot sections. As each piece hit the ground it shook the earth. No dragging to burn piles. They had a giant commercial chipper. It easily ground up pieces the size of telephone poles. This left us with huge piles of beautiful mulch, something we’ve had to purchase in the past; We use it on all our landscaping and garden paths. Win win. The crew, all 6 of them, were totally competent and cleaned up the whole area, raking up all the debris. I am on our HOA board, and sign the checks for the extensive tree work we need around here. The crew we hired at the farm was more than reasonable. Quality work is indeed possible.
