LeMay Family Collection: Some European cars of the 1950s (photo diary) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-22 The LeMay Family Collections at Marymount in Tacoma, Washington is the Northwest’s largest automobile collection. There are more than 1,500 vehicles in the collection. The museum is on historic grounds of former Marymount Military Academy and vehicles are displayed and stored in three buildings. Shown below are some of the European and Australian cars from the 1950s. 1953 Vauxhall Velox Deluxe This car was sold in the U.S. and Canada by Pontiac dealers with a new price in Canada of $2,153. It has an inline 6-cylinder, 2,262 cubic inch, 64 horsepower engine. 1953 Ford Anglia 103E Tourer This is an Australian car with an inline 4-cylinder, 1,172 cubic inch, 30 horsepower engine. 1956 Citreon 2CV Azul This was built in Belgium by Citroen of France. The new price in the US was $1,350. It has a 2-cylinder, 602 cc, 36 horsepower engine. It has a top speed of 65 mph and gets 50 miles per gallon. 1959 Jaguar Mark I 4-Door Saloon This car sold new for $3,175 and a total of 37,000 were produced. In has an inline 6-cylinder, 2,483 cubic inch, 112 horsepower engine. 1959 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller Woodie Wagon This car was the forerunner to Mini Cooper. In their book The World Encyclopedia of Classic Cars, Martin Buckley and Cris Rees report: “The much-loved Morris Minor was the outstanding economy car of its day and became one of the best-selling and longest lived too—production ran from 1948 to 1971.” In Britain the Traveller Woodie Wagon was called “Moggie” and a total of 105,000 were made. It has an inline 4-cylinder, 58 cubic inch, 37 horsepower engine. 1959 BMW 600 This car has a 36 cubic inch, H-2, 20 horsepower engine and a top speed of 64 mph. 1959 BMW Isetta 300 1-Door Sedan This car sold new for $1,048. It has a 1-cylinder air-cooled engine with 13 horsepower. It has a top speed of 50-53 mph and gets 40-45 miles per gallon.
