Republican Speaker Candidates Passing 2 Element Screening Test [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-22 Of the 9 candidates for Republican Speaker, only Tom Emmer of Minnesota and Austin Scott of Georgia passed my two element screening test consisting of: Did the candidate accept the 2020 Presidential Election Result? I used the NY Times listing: www.nytimes.com/… Is the candidate not a member of the Freedom Caucus? I personally cannot accept someone who does not pass those two criteria and I doubt that the Democratic Conference would as well. Tom Emmer is a member of both the Main Street Partnership and the Republican Study Committee. Austin Scott is a member of the Republican Study Committee. Both caucuses are generally considered to be non-extremist, though the Republican Study Committee is perhaps more conservative than the other ideological caucuses. It is also the largest ideological caucus. This doesn’t necessarily indicate whether they would be a reasonable speaker, who would be willing to work across the aisle. But rejecting the 2020 state certified election results, indicates a willingness to accept extremist partisan positions, and certainly indicates a disinclination to follow a collaborative leadership approach. I believe that in this narrowly divided Congress the Speaker must have a collaborative leadership style.
