The Inoculation Project 10/22/2023: Elementary School Books and Circuits [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-22 This week, we’re helping a Louisiana third grade expand their classroom library, and a Nebraska class learn about electricity with Snap Circuits. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects. The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools. This former Project #2 is so close to completion, it’s up here this week! Ms. Guillory teaches third grade in a small city just north of Lake Pontchartrain. She is in serious need of some new books that will appeal to her students. PROJECT #1 Project: Books a Million: in Need of Sprucing Up My Classroom Resources: Help me give my students a great classroom library! We are in need of books and pencils. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; more than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households. Location: D.C. Reeves Elementary School, Ponchatoula, Louisiana Total: $445.12 (2x matching funds from the College Football Playoff Foundation) Still Needed: $ 269.82 $55.41 ($28 from us) Project description by Ms. Guillory: Hi, I am a 3rd grade teacher. This is my second year in the classroom and I’m in need of new books for my classroom library. My students last year used hand me down books that were given to me. I am very appreciative of what I have, however I would love to have books that will engage my students. There are a few more things that would make our classroom better such as pencils and paper. I just want to make my classroom an inviting place for my students. Thank you very much. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Eric Litwin, author of the Pete the Cat book series, performs (there is no other word for it) his book I Love My White Shoes. Mr. Litwin was a special ed teacher originally, so I also added a video of him speaking to adults about making the most of learning opportunities. x x YouTube Video x x YouTube Video This week, we have a new long-term project: Mr. Sutherland teaches at an elementary school in a mid-Nebraska city. He’s hoping some Snap Circuit boards will help his class understand science concepts better. We have a different matching grant helping with this one: the CBS show Young Sheldon (actually, the foundation of the show’s creator, but “from Young Sheldon” is understandably how they want to bill it): In celebration of Young Sheldon on CBS, The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation is thrilled to support STEM projects. PROJECT #2 Project: Snap Your Way to Success! Resources: Help me give my students Snap Circuit boards to expand their knowledge of light and sound. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: West Lawn Elementary School, Grand Island, Nebraska Total: $945.64 (2x matching funds from Young Sheldon on CBS) Still Needed: $ 945.64 $780.34 ($391 from us) Project description by Mr. Sutherland: Help me give my students Snap Circuit boards to expand their knowledge of light and sound. We have an awesome reading curriculum that has a unit on light and sound. It does a great job of describing how each works. I want to take it a step further and allow my students to experiment and see firsthand how electricity can benefit us. I was fortunate enough to use these when I was in elementary and they absolutely helped me retain what I had learned. My students and I would greatly appreciate any help. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! This short video from the manufacturer gives an idea of how Snap Circuits work. It’s a great idea to allow kids to build circuits without having to learn to solder! x x YouTube Video Our main project from last week was completed, taking advantage of a great matching offer! Project #1, Everything you need to ACE Biology in one notebook: Mr. Moore teaches at an Austin high school for deaf students. He needs a terrific-looking supplementary biology book. He writes: I hope this message finds you in the best of health and high spirits. I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your generous donation towards the purchase of ACE Biology books. Your support means the world to me, and I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and belief in my educational pursuits. Your contribution will have a profound impact on my academic journey. The ACE Biology books are renowned for their comprehensive and insightful content, and your donation has paved the way for me to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. As a passionate biology student, this gift is more than just books; it is an investment in my future and the pursuit of my dreams. Your generosity not only lightens the financial burden on my shoulders but also motivates me to strive for excellence in my studies. With these invaluable resources at my disposal, I am confident that I will be better equipped to excel in my biology studies and make the most of the educational opportunities that lie ahead. I promise to study diligently and make the most of the knowledge I gain from these books. Your belief in me has given me the confidence to push my limits and aim for academic success. I hope to make you proud and, in some way, return the favor you have bestowed upon me by making the most of this generous gift. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness, generosity, and belief in my potential. Your support has not only lightened my financial burden but also given me the inspiration and motivation to continue working hard towards my educational goals. I am truly grateful for your assistance, and I will remember your generosity throughout my academic journey. Thank you once again for your incredible generosity and support. You have made a significant impact on my life, and I will be forever grateful. And, here’s a project that was completed too late last time for the teacher to have left a note by then. Science is like Magic, but Real…: Ms. Balsley’s Nevada school district finally approved a new middle-school science curriculum, but they didn’t have the resources to equip her to teach it. She writes: Thank you so much for helping fund my classroom! I recently transferred to Dilworth STEM Academy, and my new room is the old home economic room. As you can imagine, it is lacking most of the most important science equipment--such as scales, microscopes, and lab aprons! I appreciate you taking the time to find and fund my Donor's Choose request, and my students thank you too! DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project seeks to fund science, math, and literacy projects in public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1058!
