HAL 9000 and some random thoughts on artificial intelligence [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-23 The follow up to 2001 a movie called 2010 came up on my free YouTube feed and I watched it a over the weekend. I must say I enjoyed it very much. Maybe that is why I posted today about HAL 9000 and artificial intelengence. Maybe I was not paying attention, but to me AI burst on the stage early this year with the introduction of CHAT GPT-3. After I did a bit of homework I found that there was a steady development of the technology going back many years. And a key turning point that led to speeding up the development was the 2017 science paper called Attention Is All You Need. With the rise of the machine age the metaphor for how the mind works became the machine. When the electronic computer arrived then the metaphor for the mind became the computer. And now we have a new metaphor AI. Understand that AI based on the science paper mentioned above is not like a electronic computer of the last century. So the mind model is very different. And maybe a better metaphor for the mind. The AI inputs data and makes a prediction of a reply based on the input and massive amounts of data and training examples. I personally find myself trying to predict things about what I perceive in my environment. So far so good. Now here is the interesting part of the new metaphor. These Artificial Intelligence machines hallucinate. That is when the output is totally bonkers wrong or crazy. Now you do not see to much of this now because they attach a old school computer to filter out some of the non-sense. And that is where the concept of alignment comes in. Alignment is making the AI conform to human values. (what ever that is.) So, now I’m viewing feral Republican output much like hallucinating AI output. Their output that kind of makes sense has no depth of humanity. And mostly they think in terms are proven over and over again wrong. They hallucinate like just like artificial intelligence devices are prone to do.
