Peter Hotez recognized with inaugural Anthony Fauci award [1]

The Infectious Diseases Society of America has established a new award this year — the Anthony Fauci Courage in Leadership Award. The first awardee is Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccine developer and science communicator. The award is well deserved, as is the honor to Dr. Fauci to have such an award named after him.

Hotez has recently published a book raising alarms about the political mainstreaming of anti-science, based in part on his own experience of harassment as an advocate for vaccines. This book was profiled in an interview for Nature, and he also did a video interview.

Of course, by speaking out he has prompted some vapid accommodation to say “don’t call people anti-science”, just like they say not to call out racism when you see it. Such accusations should not be made lightly, and we need to distinguish between personal intention and social consequences, but only a coward would refuse to call it how they see it. The racists, anti-scientists, and other wannabe tyrants are counting on us to be cowards and to keep our mouths shut in the face of their lies and schemes (they hate Fauci because he spoke against them). We cannot give them that concession.
