The possible results of a low voter turnout [1]

The USA has one of the lowest voter turnouts in the world! Part of the reason for that is active disenfranchisement on the part of one of the two political parties, but that’s a topic for another article. The topic of this article is that numerous Americans are eligible and able to vote but don’t.

Some reasons I’ve heard for not voting include:

“I’m not into politics.”

“It doesn’t matter who gets elected. All politicians are the same.”

“I don’t like either candidate so I won’t vote at all.”

Here are a couple of the crazier reasons I’ve heard:

“I think that all of the election results are secretly planned in advance.”

“I got drafted and sent to Vietnam when I was 18, but I wasn’t allowed to vote because back then the draft age was 18 but the voting age was 21. Because I wasn’t allowed to vote then, I refused to vote in any election afterwards!”

Whatever the reasons non-voters may have, in the event that a horrible candidate or a horrible political party wins the next election and something horrific happens as a result, part of the blame will lie with America’s non-voters.
