Trump: "I don't mind being Nelson Mandela" [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-23 In a speech in Derry, NH, Trump gave the audience his thoughts on Washington and suggested he belonged in the pantheon of revered statesmen. He started with a review of DC’s crime rate and criminal justice system. "We have a capital that if you go there, you get shot. With this in mind, there's no way I can get a fair trial. You know, I'm supposed to be getting because Donald Trump challenged the election, so let's put him in jail for the rest of his life." I am confused by his logic. Most people would wonder how a jurisdiction’s ability to provide a fair trial is related to its murder rate. However, I suspect if I were to ask Google to translate “you get shot” from English to MAGA, it would answer, “There are Black people there.” I am sure the cultists were crystal on his meaning and unfazed by his gibberish. Next, Trump went to his psychological safe space by accusing others of his crimes. Then he bemoaned the shabby treatment attempted-election fixers receive in this country. And he concluded by modestly declaring he was a kindred spirit with one of history’s great statesmen. "They don't go after the people that cheated. Those people are free. If you want to challenge the result of an election, they hound you. Look what happened this weekend with two good people. They hound them, and they scare them, and they — but we don't get scared... I don't mind being Nelson Mandela because I'm doing it for a reason." Fair enough. Let Trump be Nelson Mandela — and serve 27 years in prison. It is good to find common ground. Unfortunately, for those interested in clarity, he was opaque on what he was doing “for a reason.” This is not the first time his name has been linked with Nelson Mandela. Apparently, the fact that the first leader of post-apartheid South Africa had been sent to jail for his politics before becoming head of state, was sufficient grounds for others to make the comparison. Mind you, that is the same career arc traveled by Adolph Hitler. The GOP’s philosophical leader was one prominent promoter of the idea that Trump is America’s Mandela — when he is not being America’s Jesus. In April 2023, MT Greene rushed to New York to protest Trump’s arraignment for financial felonies involving hush money payments to a porn star. After her one-woman protest, she talked with one of the usual right-wing propaganda sites to give the base her thoughts. As reported by USA Today , she said "Trump is joining some of the most incredible people in history being arrested today ," she said during an interview with Right Side Broadcasting in New York. "Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison. Jesus — Jesus was arrested and murdered by the Roman government." She said Trump joins the ranks of people who have been arrested and persecuted by "radical, corrupt governments. And it's beginning today in New York City, and I just can't believe it's happening, but I'll always support him. He's done nothing wrong." Trump — no slave to consistency — has not always been so eager to be a Mandela clone. At least if Michel Cohen is to be believed. In his book, Trump’s ex-fixer reported Trump’s analysis of Mandela’s political worth after the revered South African died in 2013. “Mandela fucked the whole country up. Now it’s a shit-hole. Fuck Mandela. He was no leader.” I could say something about what a second-rate person Trump is. But I shall let Mandela himself explain why Trump could never be Mandela. “A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other side must be closer, and thus emerge stronger. You don’t have that idea when you are arrogant, superficial, and uninformed.” Amen.
