Baltic Pipeline Break Apparently Caused by Chinese Ship [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-24 This is a pretty short note. Back when the Balticconnector pipeline was damaged, there was a lot of speculation (here at DK, and elsewhere) about it being a deliberate Russian attack. It now appears it was the anchor of a Chinese ship. There is not yet evidence as to whether the incident was accidental or deliberate, and it could easily be either. (And yes, if deliberate, then it would likely have been done in collaboration with the Russians.) Summary at yle.fi/… Key graphs: In a press conference on Tuesday evening, an NBI spokesperson revealed that a wide drag mark was found on the seabed on one side of the damaged pipeline, and a narrow drag mark was found on the other side — which continues to the east for several kilometers. ... Maritime traffic data showed that the vessel crossed the Balticconnector pipeline at the very moment a loud noise was registered in the area of the pipeline. ... A preliminary probe of the seabed by Finnish investigators led to the discovery of a large object, which once it was raised to the surface was revealed to be a ship's anchor.
