Daily Bucket: Thank you to my wife and supporting cast [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-24 I received a surprise in a text from my wife a week ago as I was out for a walk. You’ll hear the rest of the story after a boilerplate for the Bucket. I have enjoyed photography for many years. It was not until Covid struck and many of the activities I had been involved in came to a screeching halt that I started to get into bird photography. As I learned more from being with other photographers and spending lots of time taking my own photos, I started feeling I was making progress. Ms. JG, being my biggest supporter and enthusiastic spotter, encouraged me to enter some photo contests. I entered one in a show that was judged by public votes. I never heard how I did, but I didn’t win. My wife kept encouraging me as did W&B and Appy and others of you on this Bucket forum. I entered a photo in the Seattle Times’ “Reader’s Lens.” Here are their guidelines. “A few ground rules: — Photos must be recent, ideally taken within the past 90 days. — A single photographer’s work will be featured no more than once every 60 days. — No image manipulation permitted outside of cropping and simple color correction. — Complete information must be provided about the photographer and the photo, as requested below. — Your payment is the appreciation of other readers; there’s no monetary payment for the use of your photos. By entering your photo, you agree to our terms and conditions. — No professional photographers, please.” I submitted the photo initial photo of this Bucket and ended up wondering how I did. I had submitted it in late August shortly after I took the photo. As I mentioned before, I was out walking, and I got two text messages. One was from my wife alerting me that my photo had been published in the newspaper. I received another one from a friend who had also seen it. Just before the texts, I had shown some fellow photographers my photo, and they said they thought they had seen it in the newspaper. I had to see it for myself, so I looked it up on my phone. Sure enough, there was my photo. Here’s the internet page from the Seattle Times that caught my wife’s attention: You will see the photo above the hamburger photo. The photo was small, but familiar. She clicked on the photo and saw the photo that heads this Bucket. What an honor and surprise. I’ve been on a high since it was published. Again, I want to thank all of you who have encouraged me to enter a photo in a contest of some kind. You all, and especially my wife, deserve a lot of the credit for building my confidence. Thank you, and I hope there are others who share their successes entering photos in not only a Bucket, but in other publications. I hoped this would be received by you, the reader, as a thank you more than me trying to blow my own horn. I really do appreciate your support and comments. Besides, today’s my birthday. I should enter a contest because I’m getting good at birthdays. This is my 77th. Still trying to improve myself :) If you want to look at the Bucket where I first posted the photo, look here. www.dailykos.com/... Now it’s your turn. Anyone else’s birthday near Halloween? Have you seen something you’d like to share. Photos are especially nice.
