Ghana- Four Year Old Anabel Update [1]

I know this is a busy news day and there’s a lot going on in the world but I wanted to write something about Anabel.

Anabel is the little orphan girl in Ghana who was rescued by street children who found her abandoned at 3 years of age and took her to my friend John. John arranged for her to be taken care of at a child care center and we have been funding her stay there for awhile now. It is not an ideal situation, obviously, but the alternative is just not acceptable.

This center is a part of a private school and they required that she be enrolled. And of course that is a good thing. A very kind person donated the tuition and Anabel began attending kindergarten last month.

John sent me a message this morning that the center had asked for a bit more money. I sent the funds (though like usual at the end of the month, money is tight) but asked whether it was for school or for the care center. He explained that most of the children went home at night but some of them, like Anabel, slept there.

The matron had asked for a bit more money to buy milk and sweet bread to give Anabel when she woke up crying and hungry in the middle of the night.

Remember that Anabel is only four years old. She should be with loving parents who can hold her and comfort her (yes, and feed her) when she needs someone.

I am glad we can help her but I just find this terribly sad.

John and I have been talking about her future and what we can do to make her life better. But at least she has her little bit of comfort food when she wakes from a nightmare in the dead of night.

This kind of thing is why we are Democrats. This is what we are fighting for.
