[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-25 I can't seem to find this story anywhere on the radar, so to speak. So here’s Fox News: www.foxweather.com/… This guy named Otis went from a Tropical Storm to a CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE in less than one day, which has never happened before. One million people in the path had no time top prepare for what was predicted to make landfill as a tropical storm or a Cat 1 Hurricane at most. Of course, being Fox, one cannot say the obvious part out loud, the “CC” words (lest one wants to endure Perfect, Beautiful death threats from the MAGAt crowd). Maybe Otis will get some credit from Fox viewers for raining on some bad hombres. Meanwhile in real news land: In just 12 hours, Otis’ strength more than doubled from 70 mph (113 kph) winds to 160 mph (257 kph), also a record, as it neared the coast. And it got even stronger before it struck. Storms typically gain or lose a few miles per hour in 12 hours, though some outliers gain 30 to 50 mph (48 to 80 kph) in a day. What happened with Otis was just plain nuts, said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy. But it coincides with a documented trend of hurricanes rapidly intensifying more often in recent decades because of warmer water connected to climate change, scientists said. In non-sardonic disclosure: be careful out there. Be prepared. Bad things can happen faster now than can be accurately predicted because the prediction models themselves are changing in real time.
