Opinion: Candace Owens is a Right Wing Grifter [1]

The Story of Candace Owens

The Daily Wire Host, Candace Owens, 34, is one of the most notorious grifters within the American right wing. Her net worth is estimated to be between 5 and 40 million dollars.

Before Owens came out as a conservative in a 2017 YouTube video, she hosted a blog on the website called “Degree180” that contained apolitical and political content. The political content was mostly from the left-wing point of view.

For instance, in October 2015, Owens wrote an article criticizing the then-status of the party she currently aligns with in a post titled “NEWS UPDATE: THE REPUBLICAN TEA PARTY IS LED BY THE MAD HATTER.”

She wrote that Degree180 launched an unofficial “full-scale investigation into the bat-shit crazy antics of the Republican Tea Party.”

“The good news is, they will eventually die off (peacefully in their sleep, we hope), and then we can get right on with the OBVIOUS social change that needs to happen, IMMEDIATELY,” Owens wrote in her blog post.

She even wrote detailed elaborations under three points of social change that should be expected when “that last tea-party coffin is sealed.”

At one point in 2019, Owens argued that race “was not an issue” for her when she was younger, appearing to forget the fact that just a decade prior she filed a racial discrimination lawsuit.

It was during an appearance in an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News that Owens blamed Barack Obama for deepening the nation’s racial divide and accused Democrats of using “awful name-calling rhetoric” as a means of “laying down the groundwork for Hillary [Clinton] to run” in the 2016 election. “Obama did a lot to tear the country apart,” Owens told Ingraham. “I do not remember, growing up, having all of these race issues. I really don’t remember it.” “Suddenly toward the end of Obama’s [term], we started hearing all of this rhetoric drummed up — it became white versus black all over again. I shouldn’t even say ‘all over again,’ because when I was alive, this was not an issue. It all became about race,” Owens added. Many took issue with Owens’ statements, including The Intercept columnist Medhi Hasan, who was the first to point out the commentator’s lie. “Huh??? She literally sued the local education board over *racist bullying* when she was a teenager in high school!” he tweeted, adding: “Ah, the grift is strong on this one…” Hasan was referencing a lawsuit filed by Owens when she was 18 in 2008 accusing the Stamford Board of Education of not doing enough to protect her from racist harassment by classmates. According to the complaint, one student allegedly threatened to kill Owens and called her a slur. The News-Times reported that one of the classmates called Owens “dirty,” threatened to torch her house and tar and feather her she claimed. Owens missed six weeks of school over the incident, claiming it was too traumatizing to attend class. The NAACP, which Owens now calls “one of the worst groups for Black people,” helped her secure a $37,500 settlement in the case.
