George Santos To Be Expelled from Congress Next Week? [1]

Roll Call is reporting that serial liar George Santos, on the eve of his court appearance tomorrow on a superseding indictment that includes enough additional criminal charges to send him to prison for a very long time, is also facing a privileged resolution that his fellow NY Republican congressmen have now filed with the newly elected Speaker to formally expel him from Congress.

While Speaker Johnson has not yet indicated what he intends to do about this motion, he is required by the Rules of the House to bring it to the floor for a vote when Congress reconvenes next week. Last May, when Democrats forced a vote on a similar resolution, Speaker McCarthy was able to deflect it to the House Ethics Committee for further “study” with the support of a unified Republican caucus (including all of the NY delegation that is now pushing this new measure) — but such a tactic does not look promising this time around.

Of course, it still requires a 2/3 vote of the entire House to actually expel Santos, so it will be quite interesting to see how this will all play out — particularly if Johnson thinks he no longer needs Santos’s vote now that he’s safely (?) ensconced in the Speaker’s Chair.
