Putin did not die today, says the Kremlin [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-26 Yet another rumor of Putin’s illness has gained enough traction to prompt an official denial from the Kremlin. This rumor, propagated by the Telegram channel General SVR, goes so far as to say that Putin died of cancer at 8:42pm Moscow time today. (The rumor earlier this week was that Putin had a heart attack over the weekend. Whatever.) This evening the Kremlin issued another extraordinary statement, this one denying that Putin died today at his Valdai palace north of Moscow. Putin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state media that the story was an “absurd information canard”. General SVR also asserted that Putin’s entourage was using a body double to pretend that he is still alive, and that a coup was underway, led by Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. There is the theory that these rumors are manifestations of a power struggle going on inside the Kremlin as to who would replace Putin should he die. For more on the story, see: In earlier denials, in August the Kremlin denied any involvement in the airplane crash that killed Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, and in late 2021 and early 2022 the Kremlin repeatedly denied that it was planning an attack on Ukraine.
