[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-26 Well, that’s not actually what happened. Romney kept a journal and a lot of other records of his time in Washington. Then, unlike a lot of politicians, he just handed all that stuff to a reporter (McKay Coppins of The Atlantic) and let the reporter write a book. (He also gave interviews to that reporter to fill in gaps.) In a long article on the NBC News website, Chuck Todd goes into some detail about how the hell Donald Trump and the MAGA Populists took over the Republican Party. A lot of it looks like short term thinking for political purposes and losing sight of the principles you’re espousing. But there’s a lot more detail in the article. Personally, I’ve never been a Romney fan. He always seemed too slick, too prepared. And the Reason cover story on him back during his Presidential run entitled Consultant in Chief probably didn’t help boost my opinion of him. But the Todd article does make the book sound interesting. Apparently Romney did the kind of self reflection that is probably antithetical to a person like Trump. Looks like I’ll be adding Romney’s book to my ever growing To Be Read stack, unless my wife convinces be that the size of the stack is a fire hazard and needs to be kept away from the bed. I know that reading books by your political opponents is usually considered bad form. But considering where we are, it might be useful to see how we got here from the viewpoint outside your own bubble. If you’re interested, the book is available on Amazon at www.amazon.com/… in all formats from dead tree, through Kindle, and ending with two different audio versions.
