And just then Carlotta made her entrance into one of the boxes facing the stage. It was a sensational entrance. Poor Christine looked up at that new cause for commotion and recognized her rival. She thought she saw Carlotta sneer at her. That saved her. She forgot everything so that she could triumph again.

From then on, she sang with all her soul. She tried to surpass everything she had done before, and she succeeded. In the last act, when she began to invoke angels and rise into the air, she took the whole quivering audience with her, and they all felt that they had wings.

At that superhuman call a man in the middle of the amphitheater stood up facing Christine, as if he were leaving the earth with her. It was Raoul.



Angel, in Heaven bless’d …



And, with her arms outstretched and her bosom heaving ardently, enveloped in the glory of her hair hanging loosely over her bare shoulders, Christine uttered the divine cry:



My spirit longs with thee to rest!



It was then that the stage was suddenly plunged into darkness. It was over so quickly that the spectators barely had time to exclaim in surprise before the stage was lighted again.

But Christine was no longer there! ...
