Gaza statistics: almost 3000 children killed since Oct. 7 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-27 In The Fate of the Children of Gaza under Israeli Bombardment, the following statistics from Gaza were reported today (10/27) by Prof. Juan Cole of the University of Michigan: The Gaza Ministry of Health released basic statistics on Thursday, apparently in part in response to the skepticism expressed by President Joe Biden about the numbers of Palestinian dead. They released a spreadsheet with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the victims of Israeli bombing that they have documented. As of Thursday, 7,028 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli air strikes since they began after October 7, and 18,484 have been wounded. At least 2,913 of those killed were minors, 41.4% of the total dead. About twice that number of children have been wounded.…. Some 2,000 persons are thought to be buried under rubble…. About 6,500 apartment buildings have been hit by Israeli bombardment, and 190,000 apartments (flats) have been damaged or destroyed. Some 29,000 housing units have been completely destroyed. Israeli airstrikes have damaged or destroyed some 38 mosques, along with 3 churches [and 189 schools, putting 25 of them entirely out of commission.] Cole also quotes Jordan’s foreign minister who said on Thursday that those children who survive the bombing “could yet die of hunger.” Aid entering Gaza has been cut “to a trickle by the tightening Israeli blockade,” says Cole, compared to the 500 aid trucks which entered Gaza daily before the current conflict. Cole also notes that several hundred people in the south of Gaza have been killed. As a result, some of the refugees from the north who fled south at Israel’s instructions are now returning north, “since the south is just as dangerous.” ------------------ See recent comment below from demvt: Meanwhile in Gaza, all communications are cut off. No word in, no word out. No internal communications, so no emergency services. No way to know the extent of civilian casualties now! See also the quotes from the Guardian in the comment by demvt. WHO chief says it has lost contact with Gaza staff The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said the UN agency has lost touch with its staff in Gaza, with health facilities, health workers and its humanitarian partners on the ground.Posting to social media, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: This siege makes me gravely concerned for their safety and the immediate health risks of vulnerable patients. The head of the UN’s children’s agency said it has lost touch with its Gaza staff. Catherine Russell, the executive director of Unicef, said she was “extremely concerned” about the safety of her Gaza colleagues and about “another night of unspeakable horror” for the one million children in the Palestinian territory.
