Good News Roundup for Friday, October 27, 2023: Slings and arrows [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-27 Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News! Slings and arrows are unpleasant things that happen to you and that are not your fault. Examples abound: practically no one here chose tRump or the Rs, but they are still in our way. And practically no one here had much to do with the problems in Ukraine/Russia and Gaza/Israel. But this is where we are, and even when things are not our fault, they may be our responsibility (which may seem unfair, but we all know the world is not fair). So I ask all of you here to keep on fighting. Despite the fecklessness of the MSM in never reporting any good news, we are making a huge difference. And fighting is not easy (that’s why it’s called fighting). You may be asked to do something when you’re tired. When you don’t have the energy. When you are risking something. When someone has offended you, either because they are working for the other side (and we can expect a lot of that, paid by foreign actors, during the next 14 months). Or even when someone in our own camp, who you know, has done something to offend you. Gird yourselves against these slings and arrows, because we need everyone here to help. Come on in, my friends, and see what the good guys are doing. Regular Scheduled Programming No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember: 💙 There are more of us than there are of them. 💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED! 💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world. 🗽 Biden as President ! 🗽 Biden, Harris and their administration have been hard at work. Here are the last week’s posts at the White House briefing room. Tuesday, October 24, 2023: Readout of White House Meeting with Latino Organization Leaders 👎 Out with the Bad, In with the Good 👍 👎 That Robert E Lee statue has been melted down Teo Armus and Hadley Green Washington Post SOMEWHERE IN THE U.S. SOUTH — It was a choice to melt down Robert E. Lee. But it would have been a choice to keep him intact, too. So the statue of the Confederate general that once stood in Charlottesville — the one that prompted the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in 2017 — was now being cut into fragments and dropped into a furnace, dissolving into a sludge of glowing bronze. Note it was done in secret, and Wa Po could only witness it when they promised not to say exactly where it was melted down. But it is gone! 👍 HUD wins award for energy management HUD Press Release WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Public Housing, Energy Branch received an international award for the Institutional Energy Management from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). The prestigious award is granted to organizations that have achieved national and international prominence in promoting the practices and principles of energy engineering and energy management. During the 2023 AEE World Energy Conference and Expo in Orlando, FL, HUD's Energy Director, Dr. Charles Marshall, and Kevin Gallagher, the division's Director of Financial Management, received the award. “HUD is honored to receive the Association of Energy Engineers’ 2023 Institutional Energy Management Award for our dedication and performance when it comes to energy,” said Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “We are grateful for the acknowledgement of our efforts, and we look forward to continuing to partner with the energy industry.” 👍 The IRS is going where the money is: large corps and wealthy individuals IRS Press Release Ensuring large corporations and high-income, high-wealth individual taxpayers pay taxes owed The IRS is working to ensure large corporate and high-income individual filers pay the taxes they owe. Prior to the Inflation Reduction Act, more than a decade of budget cuts prevented the IRS from keeping pace with the increasingly complicated set of tools that the wealthiest taxpayers use to hide their income and evade paying their share. The IRS is now taking swift and aggressive action to close this gap. Large foreign-owned corporations transfer pricing initiative : The IRS is increasing compliance efforts on the U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies that distribute goods in the U.S. and do not pay their fair share of tax on the profit they earn of their U.S. activity. These foreign companies report losses or exceedingly low margins year after year through the improper use of transfer pricing to avoid reporting an appropriate amount of U.S. profits. To crack down on this strategy, the IRS is sending compliance alerts to approximately 150 subsidiaries of large foreign corporations to reiterate their U.S. tax obligations and incentivize self-correction. : The IRS is increasing compliance efforts on the U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies that distribute goods in the U.S. and do not pay their fair share of tax on the profit they earn of their U.S. activity. Expansion of the Large Corporate Compliance program: The IRS' Large Business & International Division's (LB&I) Large Corporate Compliance (LCC) program focuses on noncompliance by using data analytics to identify large corporate taxpayers for audit. LCC includes the largest and most complex corporate taxpayers with average assets of more than $24 billion and average taxable income of approximately $526 million per year. As new accountants come on board in early 2024, LB&I is expanding the program by starting an additional 60 audits of the largest corporate taxpayers selected using a combination of artificial intelligence and subject matter expertise in areas such as cross-border issues and corporate planning and transactions. Cracking down on abuse of repealed corporate tax break: Following the 2017 repeal of a provision of the code that provided a deduction for producing goods in the U.S., the IRS received hundreds of claims collectively seeking more than $6 billion in refunds, with a significant portion of filers claiming the deduction for the first time. The IRS launched a campaign to address noncompliance and review high-risk claims in this area. IRS efforts have been incredibly successful in ensuring revenue is collected. The efforts have recently been supported by a significant win in the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, which sided with the Tax Court and IRS in denying a refund claim based on a $1.8 billion deduction. This will have far-reaching benefits to the IRS' ongoing efforts in this space. Prioritization of high-income cases: The IRS has been ramping up efforts to pursue high-income, high-wealth individuals who have either not filed their taxes or failed to pay recognized tax debt. These efforts are concentrated among taxpayers with more than $1 million in income and more than $250,000 in recognized tax debt. Building off earlier successes that collected $38 million from more than 175 high-income earners, dozens of revenue officers are focusing on these high-end collection cases in the coming fiscal year. As announced in September, the IRS has begun contacting about 1,600 new taxpayers in this category that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes. The IRS has now collected $122 million dollars in 100 of these already assigned 1,600 cases. Examples of cases closed since the Inflation Reduction Act passed follow: An individual last month was ordered to pay more than $15 million in restitution. The individual falsified millions of dollars of personal expenses as deductible business expenses and financed construction of a 51,000-square-foot mansion, including expenses of interior and exterior construction costs; an outdoor pool and pool house; and tennis, basketball and bocce courts. The individual falsified millions of dollars of expenses for luxury vehicles, artwork, country club memberships and homes for his children. An individual last week pled guilty to filing false tax returns and skimming more than $670,000 from his business. The individual spent $110,000 on personal expenses and $502,000 on gambling. An individual was sentenced to 54 months in federal prison for fraudulently obtaining $5 million in COVID relief loans for sham businesses. The individual then spent the money on himself, purchasing Ferrari, Bentley and Lamborghini cars. Rather than simply letting it lie as an ugly testament to the picket line, Third Energy converted it into a geothermal heating station prototype that could heat 300 homes in the village of Kirby Misperton if commercially developed. ⚡️ Scholastic Books rejects bullies Laura Clawson, Daily Kos 👎 GA maps rejected — but I wonder how we can trust the GA legislature to make better maps? x 🚨BREAKING: Federal Court STRIKES DOWN Georgia's congressional and legislative maps for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Elias (@marceelias) October 26, 2023 💣 Republicans: Party of Crimes and Chaos 💣 I bring up Truth and Love a lot. Because these qualities are important. I think when you put Truth and Love first, you are also braver. At any rate, these days we can see the yukkiness of lies and hate. The Rs have given into cowardice and elected Mike Johnson. tRump may be pulling the strings, but they hate him (and we know from reports that the people at fox hate him too). Anyway, the GOP elected a Speaker at long last. Mike Johnson promises to be terrible, but they were all going to be terrible, because the one thing they still agree on is that they must not work with Democrats. This is a pretty good analysis of what happened Dana Millbank, Washington Post Johnson’s anonymity was his greatest asset. In just his seventh year in Congress, he hadn’t been around long enough, or had enough power, to make enemies. He is the least-experienced speaker in a century and a half. But he has also been an avid election denier, Trump defender and promoter of the deep-state conspiracy, which appealed to the MAGA hard-liners who had defeated McCarthy, Scalise and Emmer. Johnson had two other things going for him, too: Exhaustion (about 25 Republicans skipped the final vote in the GOP caucus meeting that nominated him Tuesday night) and a fear that, if yet another nominee failed, a small band of Republican institutionalists might actually make good on their threat to work with Democrats to return the chamber to functioning. “If you do that, you’re done,” Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Tex.) told us. “That’s not even an option.” Hey, nice to know a few Rs were considering working with Ds! But although anonymity, exhaustion and threats about Ds (and they will need to work with us anyway; we have the Senate and the White House and the Rs are not going to agree on anything else) may get a speaker elected, they are not the usual ways to pick an effective speaker. And, ugh, he’s apparently a creationist, which is so embarrassing. Sigh. ⚡️ Apparently some think this will help us next year. Kerry Eleved, Daily Kos. Well, I’m all for silver linings but I’d rather have a speaker who is not a creationist who think god has picked him. tRump bizarrely tells people they don’t need to vote Matt Young, Alex Nguyen The Daily Beast During his speech, Trump said he would have “plenty of votes”—enough that instead of voting, his fans should “get out there and watch those voters,” presumably referring to supporters of his eventual opponent. “You don’t have to vote, don’t worry about voting. The voting, we got plenty of votes.” This was at a campaign stop in New Hampshire. Now, perhaps tRump just meant the primary, and in that case, he’s right, he’s way, way ahead. But training people not to vote is a lesson they learn quickly and unlearn slowly. Many are still having trouble unlearning the concept that they should not vote early, something that has greatly annoyed other Rs. 🚚 💙 Democrats Deliver 💙 🚚 I don’t want to hear any more about the previous guy! As a reminder: An email from Simon Rosenberg (Hopium Chronicles) contained some interesting information: voters approve of Biden much more when they learn of his accomplishm3ents. According to Navigator, the accomplishments that make the most difference are: The most popular accomplishments of the Biden administration are loweringprescription drug costs, investing in infrastructure, and the CHIPS Act, amongothers. Americans have heard the most about the Biden administration loweringprescription drug costs, ramping up clean energy, and investing in infrastructure, but even on these accomplishments, fewer than three in five Americans haveheard about each one. Communicating around Biden’s accomplishments improves his net job approvalrating by double digits, especially among people unfavorable to both Biden andTrump, younger Americans, and college-educated women. If we focus on just these three things, we should see a blue tsunami next year. How else are Ds delivering? Let’s consider the new report on the economy. President Biden’s statement: I always say it is a mistake to bet against the American people, and just today we learned the economy grew 4.9% in the third quarter. I never believed we would need a recession to bring inflation down – and today we saw again that the American economy continues to grow even as inflation has come down. It is a testament to the resilience of American consumers and American workers, supported by Bidenomics—my plan to grow the economy by growing the middle class. The unemployment rate has been below 4% for 20 months in a row, real wages are up over the last year, and median wealth for American families has grown by a record amount accounting for inflation. Just yesterday, the UAW and Ford reached a historic tentative agreement that provides a record raise to auto workers and is a testament to our strategy for a powerful manufacturing future made in America, with good, union jobs. I hope Republicans in Congress will join me in working to build on this progress, rather than putting our economy at risk with reckless threats of a shutdown or proposals to cut taxes for the wealthy and large corporations, while slashing programs that are essential for hard-working families and seniors. I wish he had mentioned the Ds in Congress, too, as they helped create conditions that allowed the great GDP. Long overdue: x NBC News confirms: Senate Democrats are crafting a proposal to overcome Tommy Tuberville's blockade of military promotions. "Today we reached a tentative agreement with Ford," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a video posted to social media, while Ford also confirmed the deal in its own statement. "We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract with the UAW covering our U.S. operations," Ford CEO and President Jim Farley said. Seem to be some record pay raises, so that’s good. In a rare honorable moment, Senator Graham defends Representative Tlaib’s right to free speech Alex Nguyen The Daily Beast Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) exploded at a Newsmax reporter during a bipartisan visit to Israel, telling him off for trying to goad attendees into criticizing Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who is of Palestinian descent, for her remarks condemning Israel over the al-Ahli Arab hospital attack. ✂️ “No, stop!” Graham shot back. “We are here together, not to talk about the problems at home, which are many. I’ve got my own view of what to say. You’re not going to screw this up. Get this guy out of here.” Graham further explained himself, stating that although he doesn’t support “The Squad,” the unofficial group of progressive House members that includes Tlaib, but he believed in free speech, and believed that the Democrat and Republican senators on stage had come together to support Israel. 131 companies push for timeline to phase out fossil fuels Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch A letter from 131 companies, including Volvo, Heineken and IKEA, urges world leaders to agree on a timeline to stop using fossil fuels at the COP28 United Nations Climate Change Conference next month in Dubai. The letter was coordinated by nonprofit We Mean Business, which advocates for better global climate action. “Our businesses are feeling the impacts and cost of increasing extreme weather events resulting from climate change… To decarbonise the global energy system, we need to ramp up clean energy as fast as we phase out the use and production of fossil fuels. This means turbocharging the renewables revolution, electrifying key sectors and massively improving efficiency — thereby creating the conditions for a rapid, well-managed and just transition away from fossil fuels,” the letter states, according to a press release from We Mean Business Coalition. “We call on all Parties attending COP28 to seek outcomes that will lay the groundwork to transform the global energy system towards a full phase-out of unabated fossil fuels and halve emissions this decade.” EU votes to cut pesticide use in half by 2030 Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch The Environment Committee of European Parliament has voted to ensure sustainable use of pesticides and reduce their use by at least half by 2030. Members of Parliament (MEPs) voted to also reduce the use of “more hazardous products” by 65 percent as compared to the average from 2013 to 2017, a press release from European Parliament said. “This vote brings us one step closer to significantly reducing chemical pesticide use by 2030. It is very positive that we were able to agree on feasible compromises in an ideologically charged and industry-dominated discussion,” said MEP Sarah Wiener, rapporteur on sustainable use of pesticides, in the press release. 📥 Actions You Can Take 📤 Tax-exempt organization complaint referrals. 13909. The strategy by District Attorney Fani Willis’ office is clear: get as many co-defendants as possible to flip on the former president, leaving Trump and perhaps a few close allies on the hot seat. ✂️ One source familiar with the strategy said it can be summed up by an adage used by prosecutors in Fulton County RICO cases: “The first to squeal gets the deal.” Apparently Eastman, tRump, Giuliani and Meadows were not offered deals. The former president, however, is trying something…different. We know—with near-certainty—that former President Donald Trump is going to lose New York Attorney General Letitia James’ ongoing civil case against him for “numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation.” The judge ruled against Trump before the trial, on a motion for summary judgment filed by James. The AG said that she should win on some issues without the need for a trial, and the judge agreed. We thus know that Trump will lose. The only remaining question is how much will Trump ultimately have to pay. ✂️ trump did some things he wasn’t supposed to do, and was called to the witness stand ✂️ The judge promptly issued a ruling: “As a trier of fact, I find that the witness is not credible.” If Judge Engoron puts tRump into jail — oh, how to honor him properly? — I know, I will write him a poem. But climate change means this staple is under threat. Up to 60% of areas that grow beans in sub-Saharan Africa might not be suitable by the end of this century, according to a 2016 study. In an effort to future-proof and maximize the potential of this essential crop, the Pan-African Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) has facilitated the research, development, and distribution of over 650 new bean varieties across Africa. In September PABRA was awarded the $100,000 African Food Prize, for its work to improve food security, and incomes for farmers. From sugar beans in Zambia, to snap beans in Nigeria, 32 countries across Africa have seen improved and varied beans reach their markets, according to PABRA. It says that not only are these new beans more nutritious, but they are also more resilient, efficient and profitable for farmers. I like beans, all sorts, and they are so good for you! They are considered one of the reasons that people in “Blue Zones” live longer — because they eat a lot of pulses.
