[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-27 Some of the most intense, and nitpicky, discussion you will see on Daily Kos can be seen in the Israel/Palestine threads. And that comes as no surprise. The founding organizational principle of the site being for Democrats and keeping out Republicans puts us down this path. We don’t have the intensity of these fights over Abortion because the folks against abortion don’t last long on the site before getting bojo’d. Instead, the most intense fights on Daily Kos are those fights which split democrats. We fight over religion versus no-religion because we have people on both sides with intense feelings on the subject. Israel v Palestine (I/P) stirs up an intricate mix of oppressions, religion, death, and gripping tragedy that simply takes ahold of us and drags many of us into the fight. I include myself in this because while I haven’t been joining a lot of the discussions on I/P I have really wanted to at times. But I have mostly resisted the urge to stay away because I’m in the camp that us fighting each other over I/P is exactly what Russian, Iranian, and American oligarchs want us to be doing. Don’t get me wrong, I/P has important aspects going on which need to be paid attention to and discussed in a healthy manner. But on the scale of problems it pales in comparison to the shit show coming down the pike from climate change if we don’t get our acts together. The I/P problem is one of water rights in a land without sufficient water. It’s about land rights in a place without enough land to go around. It’s about abject poverty in a place without sufficient social structures to help those pushed to the margins. Climate change will be bringing (and has been bringing) every one of those issues and more at much larger scales. If we continue to do so little about climate change we will quickly be ignoring I/P again. Not because it will have been solved, but because it will be dwarfed in comparison. By all means read up and argue about I/P. Just ask yourselves who benefits when it inappropriately distracts us from focusing on our bigger problems.
