Podcast on Separation of Church & State [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-27 My friends David Brown and Christina Iacono have put together an amazing and crucially important podcast, called Unreasonable www.podcastunreasonable.com, about the fight for the constitutional separation of church and state. Especially in light of the elevation of the rabid Christian Nationalist Mike Johnson to Speaker of the House, this is crucial listening. As a reminder of our founders’ intentions to separate church and state (not to mention the awfulness of the English religious wars that influenced them): Article VI of our Constitution All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation. This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. All the episodes have great interviews including: Mikey Weinstein from the Military Religious Freedom Foundation – after this episode came out, his foundation was targeted, by name, in a House of Representatives military spending bill. www.militarytimes.com/... The legislation would have banned members of the armed services from contacting the Foundation! A fascinating discussion on Thomas Paine, a revolutionary and underrated figure in American History. The craziness of the Christian Revival Movement, which has spawned acolytes such as Doug Mastriano into our political system. They also provide action items to counter the powerful forces of Christian Nationalism. Christina is a Delco (sorry, Delaware County, PA) native and former elections administrator for Delaware County. David is a candidate for the PA House and a brilliant musician. His original classical music is scattered throughout the episodes and is always on point. The production is top notch – you don’t have to worry about constantly turning the volume up and down depending on who’s talking. Please check out the Unreasonable Podcast!
