[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-27 Oh hi. I get we have had a busy week. There was a mass shooting or two, and we still haven’t caught one of the guys. The GOP elected a Christofascist to lead the House of Reps, meaning everyone needs to buy stock in unblended fabric manufacturers. World War III seems imminent. I suppose it’s understandable that nobody is talking about Otis. Hurricane Otis kills at least 27 in Mexico. Tens of thousands of families sought refuge in shelters, parts of Acapulco were left in ruin and at least 27 people were dead. But the full scope of damage and injuries still remained unclear. Otis left Acapulco, a popular resort town, cut off from the rest of the country. Landslides and downed trees blocked roads, and phone service and other utilities were knocked out. On Thursday, a portion of the main highway was reopened and some utilities were being restored. But much of the city of 1 million people remained without power. ... The limited information, photos and video coming from the city show severe damage to structures, including many of the hotels and high-rises in tourist areas, and flooding that inundated city streets. Windows were blown out, roofs ripped off and vehicles crushed. ... Some said no warning was provided about the Category 5 storm, and in some hotels, guests were not moved to safer shelter. Wait...a cat 5 hurricane hit a resort town, home to a million people or more, with no warning? How can that happen? It's the climate change, stupids. Hurricane Otis slammed into the resort city of Acapulco early this morning with winds of 165 miles per hour (265 kilometers per hour). Mexico’s first Category 5 storm in history hitting a city of almost 700,000 people sounds scary enough. But the truly unnerving thing about Otis is that it was merely a tropical storm less than a day before making landfall. Cruising through warm water in the eastern Pacific, the storm “explosively intensified” in a matter of hours, in the words of the US National Hurricane Center. Otis was projected to hit Mexico as a tropical storm with 60 mph winds. Twelve hours later, it was projected to hit Mexico as a Category 5 storm with 165 mph winds. That’s what “explosively intensified” means. If you need a visual, I like this one. All of the models failed. A lot. Literally no one could have predicted this. I feel like all of our models are going to be irrelevant in the next decade or so. There are many writers out there who know and understand better than I do, I hope you all chime in.
