[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-27 There’s a lot in the world that, for better or worse, will surprise you. Ukraine fighting so valiantly against a shockingly weak Russia. Donald Trump becoming US President. A movie about a toy being utterly amazing. And then there are things that won’t. I’m in my mid to late forties. I know that no matter how long I live the following will be true when I die: North Korea will remain a totalitarian nightmare. Saudi Arabia will be run by evil sociopaths. Palestine will be on its way to non-existence (if it hasn’t ceased to exist already) I might add that Maldives will also be on its way to being underwater, but I honestly think there is more hope that we deal with climate change. Not a lot, but more. No matter what happens between now and my eventual dirt nap, these things will not change. Nuclear war, climate catastrophe, another pandemic, zombie apocalypse, changes in U.S. policy, nothing. I am 100% certain and nothing you say will convince me otherwise. Do I know a ton about I/P? Not really. I see the horrible headlines and they upset me. But I know hope for a two state solution died with Yitsak Rabin. That was over thirty years ago. Has anything in the intervening years suggested otherwise? Nope. Instead it’s been the same doom loop. It will continue. As long as there is war between two peoples with unequal power, terrorism will be the choice of the weaker side. As long as there is terrorism, the strong side will feel threatened and its people will vote for the guy that promises to protect them, by attacking the weaker side. Will anything break this cycle? No. This has gone on far too long and both sides have hardened beyond the point of reversal. All of which is to say- go easy on people you disagree with. Nothing we say or do will change anything. … At this point some of you might say “but we can change US policy towards Israel!” Doubt it! But even if we did, Palestine is still doomed. Israel will still be richer and more powerful. No one is going to save Palestine. Any of its natural allies aren’t interested in helping. They’ve either been defeated by Israel in war in the past or they can see the writing on the wall. … ”But my tax dollars support Israel!” Sort of. The government isn’t waiting for your money to print more money- fiat currency doesn’t work that way. Either way your alleged tax dollars go to other things: oil subsidies, farm subsidies to cattle ranchers, etc., which we have a much higher chance of doing something about. Like it or not, both parties are committed to backing Israel (not the case in other important issues), and the money to be made there by military manufacturers is probably more powerful than your protest. And again, without our money, Israel is still going to take the rest of Palestine. … “But, but we need to hear witness to the war crimes and/or acts of terror and stand up and say something!” Cool. Do that. Count me out. I know a lost cause when I see one. I’m not attending any Free North Korea rallies because my time is finite and doing literally anything else (playing MarioKart, petting the cats, gazing at my belly button) would have the same value. I want tangible wins, moral victories are nice but I’m not leaving my house for one. … All of this is to say- arguing so passionately about something that doesn’t have any hope of affecting the eventual outcome is unhelpful to other causes that we are committed to here at DKos have some chance of affecting. We might make a difference in the upcoming US elections. We might work together to affect change on a local level. We might learn something from the lived experiences of our fellow commenters. None of this is helped by a the kind of angry infighting we see in these diaries. It’s ok to disagree, but try to be nice about it.
