Photo Diary: Zoo Tampa [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-28 I’ve been a member of Zoo Tampa for many years and have been here literally a couple hundred times, but I never get tired of it. Some photos from a day at the zoo. On this particular day, it so happened that several animals were awake and out that are usually asleep when I visit, so I got to take some photos of them, which I usually can’t do. For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently wintering in Florida. The zoo Currently decked out for Halloween The walk-through Aviary Inca Tern. I love the mustachio. Mandarin Duck. Lovely colors. Violaceous Turaco. Sounds like the name of a death metal band. Blue Breasted Kingfisher. A long name for a small (but lovely) bird. I bless the rains down in Africa. (Sorry if I planted an earworm.) The very spacious African Elephant paddock Bay Duiker. Very shy, not often out in the open. South African Jackass Penguins. They make a braying sound like a donkey. Ahhhhh. Hamadryas Baboons grooming. They spend hours doing this. You can, uh, tell he’s having a good time. Shoebill Stork. I love these guys. Very dinosaurian. They can look me straight in the eye. I want one. Colobus Monkey, with lunch Asia Malayan Sun Bear. Usually just an unmoving lump in a corner. Orangutan looking pensive. Siamang Komodo Dragon. Most lizards are kinda stupid, but with monitor lizards you can see that somebody’s home in there. Malayan Tapir, usually asleep Most of the Australia section is being remodeled I don’t think the Koalas ever wake up Native Florida species Manatee Hospital for injured or distressed Manatees The recovery pool, where rehabbed Manatees wait to be released back to the wild Coral Snake. I think I can count the number of times I have seen him on one hand—he spends all his time hidden. Striped Skunk. Also usually asleep, and seen only a handful of times.
