Point Defiance Zoo: Sea Otters (photo diary) [1]

The Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington has some Sea Otters. The sea otter diet includes sea urchins, crabs, octopuses, abalone, mussels, clams, and snails. In the wild they eat several times a day, but in the zoo, they are fed less frequency, putting their food in plastic tubs. In some of the photos below, one of the otters is playing with the food bowl in an attempt to tell the keeper that it was mealtime. According to the keeper, who was standing beside me as I took these photographs, this is a fairly new behavior for this otter.
