WYFP: Spooky Oregon [1]

I have an ambivalent relationship to the concept of ghosts and hauntings.

When I was a teenager and in my early 20’s, I housesat for the managers of a mortuary, who lived above “the store”. The only scary moment I had was when I forgot to turn out the lights, running down late one night and having to chase the family dog while praying he didn’t run into the workroom where the mortician was plying his trade. I caught the dog and all was fine, never heard, saw or felt anything weird in that place.

Fast forward to years later living in my late Father’s house and answering the door when hearing the bell, only to find no one there. There were weird phone calls where I would pick up and no one would be there, my sisters telling me, “oh, it’s just Dad”.

Fast forward years later, living in Salem Oregon in 2007, the same things started happening again, only this time, because my porch was wood and hollow, I heard my next door neighbor running down my stairs giggling. The california house had a cement porch, couldn’t hear anyone running down it. Again, people, even strangers would try to tell me it was just ghosts. Riiiiiiight.

Fast forward to my present building, I had two Reach staffers try to convince me all the things happening here was “just ghosts” I’ve never believed any of it. I have yet to have a genuinely spooky experience. Way too many people in my life have used the idea of “ghosts” to play mind games on me. That said, I still love Halloween and all the spooky stuff.
