[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-29 Okay, y’all, pet peeve here. I’m really bothered by propensity I’ve noticed to say something like, “If Biden had done it, well then,” when it comes to something Trump’s done. The implication is that Trump is somehow more powerful. This goes back to even, “If Obama had done it, well then… “ And furthermore, it even generalizes into, “If a woman had done it,” or, “If a Black person had done it,” or, “if a gay person had done it,” and so on. Well, guess what? Biden doesn’t do things like that. Neither does Obama. Neither do the majority of women, Black people, gay people, and every other people in general. I don’t think it serves us well to imagine, if we did what Republicans do, what consequences would befall us. I think we’re much better served by saying we’re not people who would do that. Because that’s where our power resides. ___________________________ And I used women, Black people, and gay people for this example because, A, those are people I have lots of contact with and, B, because those groups have significant political power in this country and so don’t need as much explaining as other groups as to why they matter. I don’t want to alienate anyone who doesn’t fall into one of those categories. In my experience, people are people. Some people rock. Some people suck. I’m firmly on the rock side. But I think we fall into the suck side’s trap when we talk about, “If we behaved like they do,” instead of being firm in our conviction that we aren’t the kind of people who behave like they do.
