The GVA defines mass shootings as when at least four people are injured or killed, excluding the shooter. Many of the shootings took place at large gatherings in the early hours of Sunday. This weekend's mass shootings come as the country mourns the victims of its deadliest mass shooting this year. Days earlier, 18 people were killed in a shooting in Lewiston, Maine. Christian Science Monitor Creeping abortion restrictions in Russia spark outrage Recent proposals by authorities to restrict access to abortion have struck a nerve across Russia. While abortion remains legal, new regulations and mandates from the Health Ministry are designed to discourage women from seeking terminating pregnancies. Despite its last-minute scheduling, the meeting at a bookstore in Russia’s westernmost city of Kaliningrad still drew about 60 people, with many outraged by a lawmaker’s efforts to ban abortions in local private clinics. The weeknight turnout surprised and heartened Dasha Yakovleva, one of the organizers, amid recent crackdowns on political activism under President Vladimir Putin. “It’s clear that there is a gradual erosion of abortion access and rights in Russia, and this is similar to what has taken place in the U.S.,” said Michele Rivkin-Fish, an anthropologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Guardian Abortion rights will be in French constitution next year, Macron vows Emmanuel Macron has promised to enshrine a woman’s right to an abortion in the French constitution by next year, after restrictions in other countries propelled France on a path towards unconditionally guaranteeing abortion rights. The French president said on Sunday that his government would submit a draft text to France’s highest administrative court over the coming week, with the aim of making abortion rights constitutional by the end of the year. “In 2024, the right of women to choose abortion will become irreversible,” he wrote on social media. The announcement follows a promise made by Macron on 8 March, International Women’s Day, when he tweeted in response to the overturning of federal abortion rights in the US last year: “A universal message of solidarity to all women who today see this right violated: France will engrave in its Constitution the freedom of women to have recourse to abortion.” The Guardian Joe Biden and Xi Jinping meeting a step closer, says US The US and China have agreed to work towards setting up a meeting between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping after the US president met with China’s foreign minister on Friday. Biden has invited Xi to San Francisco in November for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit. The Chinese president has not yet confirmed he will come. Biden held talks with Wang Yi and other senior US officials in Washington, the White House said, with both countries agreeing to keep up “high-level diplomacy” to try to smooth ties. The two sides “reaffirmed” they were “working together towards a meeting between President Biden and President Xi Jinping in San Francisco in November”, a White House statement said. Reuters Mexico throws troops, aid into Acapulco as hurricane death toll rises ACAPULCO, Mexico, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Mexico's government on Sunday intensified efforts to get the stricken coastal city of Acapulco back on its feet as the toll of dead and missing from a record-breaking hurricane that ravaged the iconic beach resort continued to rise. Hurricane Otis ripped through Acapulco as a Category 5 storm on Wednesday, wrecking homes, hotels and businesses with 165 mph (266 kph) winds which downed power lines and communications, leaving the city of nearly 900,000 inhabitants incommunicado. Looting broke out as food, water and gasoline become scarce after the destruction caused by Otis, which the government on Sunday said had killed 48 people, with six people missing. The governor of the southern state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located, earlier said 36 people were unaccounted for. A day earlier, the toll stood at 39 dead and 10 missing. Reuters G7 calls for immediate repeal of bans on Japanese food, pressing China TOKYO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - The Group of Seven (G7) industrial powers called on Sunday for the "immediate repeal" of import curbs on Japanese food products, a reference to China's restrictions after Japan began releasing wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The G7 trade ministers, in a statement after a weekend meeting on Osaka, did not mention China but they also denounced what they consider its rising economic coercion through trade. "We deplore actions to weaponize economic dependencies and commit to build on free, fair, and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationships," said the 10-page statement. China slapped a blanket suspension of Japanese fish imports two months ago when Japan started the release of treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima plant into the Pacific. While Japan and the U.S. have called the curbs unfair, Russia announced a similar restriction earlier this month. Deutsche Welle After Afghanistan quakes, women and children need urgent aid The nights are getting colder in Afghanistan, increasing the risk of contagious diseases in the crowded tent camps where people are urgently awaiting humanitarian aid. More than 154,000 people were affected by a series of earthquakes that devastated the western Herat province in early October, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Local media have reported that more than 2,000 people were killed and thousands injured. "The injured, including many women and children, are in dire need of medical assistance," volunteer worker Niloufar Nikseyar told DW. A former lecturer at Herat University, she has been supporting local aid groups since the earthquakes. "I was in three small villages today where many houses were completely destroyed. The first relief supplies such as flour and water have finally arrived there. The women have to bake bread and provide for their families with the limited resources they have. There is a shortage of everything here, especially powdered baby formula, cough syrup and sanitary pads," she added. Raw Story At least 32 dead in major traffic accident in Egypt A collision involving a passenger bus and several cars on a highway in Egypt killed 32 people on Saturday, the country's Health Ministry said. Sixty-three others were injured in the accident that happened on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road, the ministry added in an online statement. Earlier Saturday, state-run newspaper al-Ahram reported that investigations revealed an oil leak from a passing car led to a collision among a large number of vehicles with several of them catching fire. Most of the dead bodies were charred, the report said. Twenty-nine cars were gutted and 35 others damaged in the crash, al-Ahram quoted a security source as saying.
