The DaBonz family is back at Street Prophets [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-29 Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, the place where politics meets up with religion, science, art, nature, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!) and join us. Street Prophets is an open thread. All topics are welcome. I was a strange mother. Or maybe I should say I invented my own way of parenting, not having any examples in my family or my circles to emulate. I had a genuinely long list of “don’t-s” but precious few “do-s”. But I got the job done, with a more than satisfactory result, much to the dismay of my friends and relations, who desperately wanted my unconventional ways to fail. I wouldn’t recommend the same with just any child/parent combination. Parenting has to be individualized to fit the personalities of both parent and child, so the adult has to be aware of, and responsive to, their own child. In my case, when Hallowe’en was nearing and other parents I knew (those who read to their children; not everyone did) were reading “Three Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Fence” I read things to my three year old such as “The Spider and the Fly” (there is a book with terrific illustrations) or “The Mewlips”, both lifelong favorites of hers. That explains the following pictures. Her Hallowe’en decorations started with the usual blow-up Dracula’s Castle façade around the front door, with a suitably creepy castle interior backdrop visible when the door was opened. That last was just to keep trick-or-treat-ers from seeing into the house, but it was so popular people would ask if their kids could pose in front of it in costume for their pictures. It grew every year, until last year she put up a scene involving a skeleton family, different for each day of October, and it won the HOA award for best Hallowe’en decorations. Again, families brought their children, now every day, to pose with the display. She’s doing the same this year. I’m not doing all of them because that’s a whole lot, but here are some. You get the idea. Yes, visitors are allowed to stop by and play. The thread is now open. What are your plans for Hallowe’en? No trick-or-treat here, too dangerous for kids to be on the dirt road with no sidewalks and no streetlights. It will just be Tuesday here.
