[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-30 I’m sorry, but I cannot help thinking about something biblical when it comes to the end of Mike Pence’s political career. While Pence believes he is a great student of the Bible, I don’t think he ever really read or understood the Book of Jeremiah. Now, bear with me on this folks. I am no expert on the Bible, but Jeremiah specifically warned the Judeans of the 6th Centry B.C.E. to beware the lies of false prophets. And if ever an arrogant, self righteous man hitched his wagon to a false prophet, it was Bible thumping Mike Pence who was Trump’s earnest sycophant. Even in his most recent humiliation (the end of his insipid presidential campaign), Pence still believes he “has a calling” to be president. News Flash to Mike Pence: that voice calling to you is not God but your blind ambition. Seeing as Pence prefers the Old Testament to the New (he claims to be a disciple of Christ, but nothing in his voting record or political stances is remotely merciful to those in need), I thought about the Prophet Jeremiah. Despite the hell fire and brimestone in the book of Jeremiah, it seems that one of the things that really pissed off Jeremiah — besides the blatant idolotry and pagan worshipping — was how the wealthy Judeans treated the poor. Therefore, I have a small soft spot for anyone who pushes an agenda of helping out the needy. Anyway, Jeremiah was preaching that God was already punishing the Judeans for their sinful ways with a severe drought. And it appears that some other so called “prophets” were saying that the drought was no big thing (early climate change denialism?). And this is where Jeremiah warns the Judeans about listening to false prophets. 13 “Ah! Lord GOD,” I replied, “it is the prophets who say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword; famine shall not befall you. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’” j 14 said to me: I did not send them; I gave them no command, nor did I speak to them. They prophesy to you lying visions, foolish divination, deceptions from their own imagination. These prophets utter lies in my name, the LORDsaid to me: I did not send them; I gave them no command, nor did I speak to them. They prophesy to you lying visions, foolish divination, deceptions from their own imagination. k 15 Therefore, thus says the LORD: Concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, though I did not send them, and who say, “Sword and famine shall not befall this land”: by sword and famine shall these prophets meet their end. l 16 The people to whom they prophesy shall be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and the sword. No one shall bury them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour out upon them their own wickedness. m Now, Bible thumpers like Pence LOVE this stuff. It’s God being his very vengeful self. God has already decided that the Judeans need a lot of suffering, so besides drought, God let the Bablylonians defeat the Judeans in battle and take over all the land of Judea. The well to do were carted off to Babylon for their exile. The poor were left behind. Whether or not you believe any of the above, the Judeans did lose to the Babylonians, and many were take into exile. Historians would simply say that this is cover for Judeans getting their asses kicked. The Bible always has God punishing the ancient Israelites by having their enemies triumph in military campaigns (see Philistines and Assyrians). Anyway, fire and brimestone is what evangelical assholes like Pence love to preach about America. God is going to punish America because we are a sinful people….yada, yada, yada. And I am sure that is what Pence remembers about the Book of Jeremiah. I’m more in the frame of mind of thinking that Mr. False Piety was brought low because he made a deal with one of the biggest false prophets in American history: Donald Trump. Any secular humanist could have told Pence that Trump was an evil man. Hell, even “Mother” told him this from what I have read. But nope. Pence decides to be the vice president to a man who had no business ever being president. And the one act where Pence did the bare minimum of his real duty to the Constitution and country was the official end of Pence’s political career. Pence was trying to find a way to block the certification of the 2020 Election without breaking the damn law, and it was finally Dan Quayle who told Pence, “You have no choice. You have to certify the election.” When Pence fulfilled his duty and certified the election results, Trump tried to have him killed. And all of Trump’s followers damned Pence for all time. But Pence thought that voice in his head was God calling to him to run for president: Facing a steep climb to qualify for the third GOP primary debate, the former vice president told a crowd at the Republican Jewish Coalition Annual Leadership Summit in Las Vegas on Saturday that he had realized “it’s not my time” before suspending his campaign. “The Bible tells us that there’s a time for every purpose under heaven,” Pence told the gathered audience of activists and donors. “Traveling across the country over the past six months, I came here to say it’s become clear to me that it’s not my time.”… In recent days on the campaign trail, Pence seemed to be grappling with the end, talking about his campaign in the past tense and telling a voter in Greenfield, Iowa, earlier this month that while he felt called to run for the presidency, he did not feel certain of the final result. “We didn’t run because we felt like we saw some clear eight-lane superhighway straight to the Oval Office,” Pence said that day. “It has been an unbroken blessing to be traveling among the people of this state.” It would be his last trip to the caucus state. He should have realized that “it was never his time.” The Trump maniacs hate him. The Never Trumpers hate him. And the rest were “Trump may not be perfect, but I love his policies!” So where the hell was Pence going to go with this delusional run of his? So bye bye to Mike Pence. May we never be cursed to listen to his hypocritical preaching again. NOTE: I grew up a Catholic, but I gave it up for Lent decades ago. Do I believe in a God? I think there might be some greater power in the universe, but I have no firm proof. I just thought hitting Mike Pence with the Bible was a fun thing to do.
