Ohio GOTV and Constituent Service Request forms: a Match made for Turnout [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-30 So the final numbers aren’t all in, but we had a historic canvass turnout this weekend for GOTV in Ohio. And one thing we keep hearing in Ohio (not so much elsewhere) is that they love the Constituent Service Request forms. Love is not too strong a word. They love the idea, they love offering them up to voters and they absolutely love it when someone tells us they got a result. Now, that doesn’t happen often, we aren’t big enough that we could be knocking on the same door twice during a regular canvass period. But we have heard back (at least) 8 times this year that a voter not only had communication with an (inevitably Democratic) elected official but also had a satisfactory result. 8 may not sound like a lot for a state of not quite 12 million people but it is 8 positive feedbacks that actually made it’s way back to our volunteers when we weren’t knocking twice on voter’s doors. 8 positive comments out of the 4,198 CSRs we have actually distributed in Ohio. EIGHT! What’s the big deal? We ask voters if they can think of any public services they’d want for their neighborhood, and while most voters can’t think of any, those who do know right off the bat. The median needs to be mowed. A pothole needs to be fixed. Voters know it if they see it. We don’t think too much about this. Most of us probably have a normal expectation that public services will be rendered when appropriate. That’s what government is for. But we are Democrats, we believe in government and we expect government to do its job. Maybe a better word for it is, we are strong Democrats with expectations of government. But most of the 1,433,712 voters whose doors we have knocked on in Ohio are not strong Democrats. We rarely get even close to the 50% Democratic + 50% independent voter split that we’d like to see for volunteers when they are knocking on doors in Ohio. It’s not as bad as it was in Montana this Summer, but the houses we visit are overwhelmingly unaffiliated voters. And we leave behind a very simple message for the voters we talk to: Democrats Deliver. And the Constituent Service Request form is one of the ways that we reinforce that message. The other way, of course, is by asking voters about how they feel about government, their issues and their elected officials. It’s not quite the same thing, but we keep hearing, “I’ve never been polled before” (this isn’t a poll), in Ohio and in other states. But people liked to be asked. To be honest, we glean a lot of relevant information from the feedback we receive with this survey. Periodically, i will hear from someone i know on Sen. Brown’s campaign and the question he always asks is about responses to Q12 (Where do you get most of your information about politics and government?). This is also something that we’ve shared with OPRR both before the August special and this Fall. Hope Springs from Field PAC has been knocking on doors since March in a grassroots effort to prepare the 2024 Electoral Battleground in what has been called the First and Second Rounds of a traditional Five Round Canvass. We are canvassing Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. Obviously, we rely on grassroots support, so if you support field/grassroots organizing, voter registration (and follow-up) and our efforts to protect our voters, we would certainly appreciate your support: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/hope4ohio Hope Springs from Field understands that volunteer to voter personal interactions are critical. Knocking on doors has repeatedly been found to be the most successful tactic to get voters to cast a ballot and that is the goal of what we do. On Friday, we start hitting GOTV hard. More than 2,500 volunteers showed up for our last hybrid GOTV/Issues Survey canvass and we pushed volunteering for GOTV Week hard. We expect great turnouts this week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday & Tuesday). So far, we have identified 122,935 Reproductive Freedom or single-issue or Abortion Rights voters in the major metropolitan suburbs who have yet to cast a ballot. These are voters who told us they will support Issue 1, the constitutional amendment guaranteeing Reproductive Healthcare Choice to all women in the state. We are now dedicated to GOTV, getting these voters to the polls. So we are going into the weekend knowing 2 things: we don’t have all the numbers in yet (new Abortion Rights voters from this past weekend) and that our GOTV universe is much bigger than it was for the August special election. We could use your financial assistance here. Like any grassroots effort, this is a seat-of-your-pants operation. We don’t (can’t accept even if we did) take corporate donations, we rely on grassroots support. So if you can help, please do. If you are able to donate to our efforts to fight and pass Issue 1, identify abortion rights supporters, protect our voters, especially in minority communities, expand the electorate, please help: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/hope4ohio You can follow that link for our mailing address, as well. Thank you for your support. This work depends upon you!
