GOTV in Suburban Ohio: Ground Game Prep for GOTV Week [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-31 So this is it. It all comes down to GOTV Week, all the work we have put in, all the data we’ve collected from the 1,632,023 doors we’ve knocked on in the Ohio suburbs — now the fun begins! Taking Advantage of Halloween to Make the Point! Hope Springs from Field PAC volunteers have identified 136,761 Reproductive Freedom voters, which is our suburban GOTV universe going into Friday. This number will be reduced as VAN identifies more voters who have voted early, We are actually hoping it gets reduced by a lot! Yep, we remove the names of supporters who have already voted; no need to trouble them now. It’s a big GOTV universe, kinda scary. That’s 98,349 homes that we think will need 1,294 volunteers to make our first lit drop on Friday evening. We don’t have 1,294 volunteers signed up yet! Like i said, we are hoping this number will drop a lot by Friday. Our campaign GOTV (or electoral battle) plan in Ohio is the same as August, and really simple, comprising of 3 phases — the last two actually running concurrently with the first. Phase 1 is our hybrid GOTV/Issues Canvass . Even though this is a hybrid approach, we will weed out voter households where everyone has already voted. This ends on Sunday. . Even though this is a hybrid approach, we will weed out voter households where everyone has already voted. This ends on Sunday. Phase 2 is pure GOTV . This continues on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. . This continues on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Phase 3 is Ballot (or signature) Curing. When we are told that there are voters who need to correct a missing signature, or failed to provide a photo ID, before their ballot can be counted, we will initiate frequent attempts at contact until they correct their ballot error. This has been ongoing, and ends when we have won (or November 11th). Our Victory! Basically, we won’t stop working to turn out supporters for Issue 1 until the vote is called. We are determined to win this one, as well. And, like in August, we are hoping this all ends on Tuesday night in victory. We will only continue the Ballot Curing effort if needed. But both organizers and volunteers feel more confident about the Ballot Curing this time. In August, we had organizers and volunteers from Georgia come up to help everyone understand the process and, especially, the voter reactions they had by doing Ballot Curing in Georgia elections. (They were newbies, too, in 2021 but pros by 2023!) But i do think people are more confident going into GOTV Week. We have done this before! We know what we are doing! It wins elections! The victory in August was indeed confidence building. And Democrats don’t always feel confident in their expectations about electoral outcomes in Ohio. You gotta love the continuation of the Ohio-Michigan rivalry To date, 385,768 Ohioans have voted in an election that (among other things) “will decide whether to enshrine abortion protections into the state constitution or be the first to reject an abortion-rights measure since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.” This ballot initiative in Ohio also has ramifications for the Senate election in the state next year. Sure, not every Hope Springs volunteer is going to come out next year. I imagine we are likely to have a lot more men (percentage wise) who come out to canvass for Sherrod Brown. But think about the confidence that winning these elections this year has on the prospects for Democrats retaining the U.S. Senate next year. 800 volunteers who knocked on doors on October 21st took their walk lists home last week and continued to call on those houses they had canvassed that Saturday. Someone called it homework. But they found another 23,175 voters who answered questions from a condensed Issues Survey, including whether they supported Issue 1 and if they planned to vote in the election. We have ended reaching out and tracking voters who have requested an absentee ballot in their counties to focus on GOTV. Here’s the thing: we are asking a lot from our volunteers during GOTV, and GOTV lasts beyond Election Day in states like Ohio, where we can cure ballots. But Hope Springs’ openness to ideas increases volunteer enthusiasm, commitment. We wouldn’t even be in Ohio if a DKos commenter (probably more than one, but i don’t remember) didn’t say (about our canvassing in Senate Swing States), “What about Ohio?” 2,762 volunteers showed up to knock on doors in Ohio with Hope Springs on Saturday. We are knocking on doors in three Congressional Districts (OH-01 represented by Democrat Greg Landsman (the grey CD on the lower left), OH-09, Marcy Kaptur (the pink CD on the top left) and OH-13, Emilia Sykes (the grey CD on the top right)) as well as the Columbus and Dayton areas. We’ve added 11 more Ohio (volunteer) organizers since the start of Summer, and that means the ability to handle more canvassers. But the truth is that we have people cutting turf from outside the state, as well, as efforts in their states have wound down.
