Mike Johnson — Our New Republican House Speaker [1]

Sadly, fervent Trump supporter Mike Johnson (R-LA) is the new Republican House Leader. Seems kind of appropriate on the eve of Halloween.

Let’s look at Johnson’s solid right-wing views: He has opposed aid to Ukraine; voted against the recent bill to keep the government open; opposes abortion and LGBTQ rights; voted against bipartisan legislation to codify same-sex marriage; doubts climate science; doesn’t believe in the separation of church and state; blamed school shootings on students being taught evolution; and against gun control.

And remember, almost immediately after the 2020 election, he emerged as a strong supporter of then-President Trump’s unfounded claims that the election was stolen from him.

With a government shutdown and $61 billion of critical aid for Ukraine looming, we will quickly learn what kind of House Leader Johnson is going to be. I am not optimistic.

In time, we may look back on Kevin McCarthy’s short time as House Speaker with nostalgia. Happy Halloween.
