My sister the pro-book banning MAGA fired by library — now the latest poster child for the ACLJ [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-01 So, this morning, I was making the rounds of the various Christian nationalist legal organizations’ websites, as I routinely do once a week or so as the research director at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). One of these Christian nationalist legal organizations whose site I routinely check is, of course, Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow’s American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), which has repeatedly attacked and lied about MRFF for over a decade and a half. But this post isn’t about MRFF. The above is just an explanation of why I happened to be on the ACLJ’s website and why I’m so familiar with this hateful, bigoted, and dishonest coterie of “Christian” lawyers. This post is about what greeted me on the ACLJ’s homepage — a picture of my pro-book banning, LGBT-hating, apparently-now-Christian-supremacist, MAGA sister, New Hampshire state Rep. Arlene R. Quaratiello (the initial “R” being for Rodda), with the headline: “Defending Conservative Lawmaker Fired From Library for Her ‘Political Values’ Because She Spoke Out To Defend Parents and Children.” It seems my sister’s published diatribes against “woke” libraries, which are somehow inexplicably also “Marxist,” got her fired from a public library — who would have seen that coming? So now she is suing the library and the town it is in. Her lawsuit, Quaratiello v. Raymond, was filed by the ACLJ in the United States District Court for New Hampshire on October 27. Here’s how the ACLJ describes the case on its website: “The ACLJ just filed a new federal lawsuit to defend the constitutional rights of Representative Arlene R. Quaratiello, a conservative Republican member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Her service in the legislature is part-time, and our client started a full-time job as a librarian at the Dudley Tucker Library in December 2022. She was then fired for her ‘political values.’” According to her termination letter from the library, which is an exhibit in the case and is posted on the ACLJ website, my sister was warned before being hired about keeping her “personal/political values and agendas” separate “from DTL policies, procedures and occurences,” with the letter saying, “This was a topic of discussion at your second interview.” According to the lawsuit, my sister was terminated on April 5, but was reinstated on April 21 after she threatened legal action. But now, even though the library reinstated her, she’s taking legal action anyway. Why? Because she’s not happy at her job. Her boss is being a meanie and she’s afraid she might get fired again. Well, boo-freakin’-hoo. I will say, however, after reading some of her recent articles and letters to papers, that you do have to give my sister, who was after all a published author in her pre-cult member days, credit for her creative writing abilities. In one gem that she wrote about the proposed New Hampshire “Parental Bill of Rights,” which was published in the New Hampshire Union Leader, she managed to work communist Russia, Hitler, and Mao as well into her prediction of the collapse of civilization that will ensue from the state legislature’s failure to pass the bill, writing: “if they don’t assert parental authority, prohibit secrets and lies, and uphold the importance of ‘the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,’ our democracy itself might not survive. We need only look to historical precedent — the Communist Russian Revolution’s ‘Family Code’ of 1918, Hitler’s Youth, the Maoist Cultural Revolution — to see what happens when parental rights are not upheld and truth is no longer considered essential.” None of this should come as a big surprise to me. I’ve known for a number of months now that my sister had descended into the MAGA cult. I found out while scrolling on Twitter one night back in the spring and and spotting her in a photo of red-hatted people standing on a stage with TFG. The photo was of Trump’s “New Hampshire Elected Leadership Team,” and, sure enough, she’s on it. I do have to smile a little knowing that by my writing and posting this Jay Sekulow will find out that his ACLJ’s latest poster child is a Rodda.
