Allowing Netanyahu to Run the War is a Fatal Mistake [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-04 Why? Because the goal of this operation should be to eliminate Hamas and make Israel more secure. Netanyahu, however, has his own agenda, which will imperil the aforementioned goals, and he is still in charge. In my previous post, I pointed to a poll recently done in Gaza. The survey’s findings reveal that Gazans had very little confidence in their Hamas-led government. Asked to identify the amount of trust they had in the Hamas authorities, a plurality of respondents (44 percent) said they had no trust at all; “not a lot of trust” was the second most common response, at 23 percent. Only 29 percent of Gazans expressed either “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of trust in their government. Most Gazans do not align themselves with Hamas’s ideology, either. Unlike Hamas, whose goal is to destroy the Israeli state, the majority of survey respondents favored a two-state solution with an independent Palestine and Israel existing side by side. So, the majority of the population of Gaza wants to see Hamas no longer in charge of Gaza. Any Israeli concerned about security wants to see Hamas no longer in control of Gaza - a necessary step in eliminating Hamas. It would seem that those common interests represent an opportunity for collaboration. However, the idea of cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians, which could lead to peace which would result in a two-state solution, is anathema to Netanyahu and his extremist allies. They will do anything to prevent that - even provide covert support to a rabidly anti-semitic terrorist organization. Netanyahu and the Israeli officials before him who engaged in the policy of covertly supporting Hamas must have known that supporting and funding a terrorist organization to divide Palestinians would result in Israelis being killed. If you provide the funding to arm and empower terrorists who are bent on the destruction of Israel, what will the terrorists do with those arms? If you did not know before, you know now after the disaster of October 7th. The Israeli right-wing wanted Gaza to be a disaster. What could be better than a dysfunctional Gaza run by terrorists to use as justification for denying Palestinians a state? But that state of affairs could not have come to pass without Israel's covert support for Hamas. Netanyahu should be facing justice along with his Hamas allies for the savage barbarities of October 7th. Instead, he is in charge of eliminating the Frankenstein he was instrumental in creating. And that's a deadly serious problem for Israel. Just as Netanyahu’s actions resulted in an Israeli 9/11 - his actions now are planting the seeds of a future disaster. Commenters here dismiss a focus on Netanyahu since he will soon be gone. That may be true, but not before he destroys any chance of fixing this threat to Israel. Netanyahu’s war plan has zero to do with eliminating Hamas and everything to do with using this opportunity to advance his agenda of ethnic cleansing and driving as big a wedge as possible between Palestinians and Israelis to ensure there will be no talk of peace or a Palestinian state. Driving a million-plus Palestinians out of their homes with no food, water or shelter will not make it easier to kill Hamas. But it is the best way to ensure that a new generation of Palestinian youth is radicalized by subjecting them to Israeli terror and slaughtering their siblings, parents, and friends. Drive a population that was fed up with Hamas and ready to be rid of it into the arms of Hamas. The Netanyahu-Hamas alliance is still in full effect. Bush used 9/11 to sell an illegal war in Iraq as ‘getting tough with the terrorists’ and as needed for the security of the USA. It was neither. It was a cover to carry out a crackpot Neo-con scheme. Long after Bush and Cheney are gone we are still living with the consequences of their disastrous policies. It’s the same with Netanyahu’s war plan. Just as his scheme of promoting Hamas ended in a fiasco that cost countless Israeli lives, this new plan will have even more disastrous results. It’s not about getting tough with terrorism or doing what is needed to secure Israel. It’s about doing what’s needed to advance the Netanyahu coalition’s agenda, which is a mortal threat to Israeli security. Whats the alernative? Netanyahu should be arrested for aiding and abetting terrorists. A new plan for killing Hamas and bringing Gaza back under a unified Palestinian government should be devised in cooperation with the USA, the Palestinian Authority, and the Egyptians. Gazans should be allowed to return home and supplied with the aid they need. Targeted killings of Hamas should continue but in a way that doesn’t create more terrorists than are killed by killing innocents. The settlements would cease, violence by settlers would cease, and the settlements would begin to be dismantled. All of this would be a first step to peace and security. Of course, none of this is likely to happen. Even though Netanyahu created this mess, he is being given carte balance to create a new and even bigger mess. Don't believe that BS Netanyahu is feeding supporters of Israel that he is doing what is needed to ‘get tough’ with terrorists. The comment thread will probably fill with comments pointing out that the other side are the bad guys, and it’s all their fault. Past atrocities committed by Palestinians and Israelis will be pointed to as proof. Nothing will get resolved, and the cycle of violence will continue until it destroys both peoples. It does not matter if you believe the Israeli narrative or the Palestinian narrative of how we got here. There is no future for the 7.1 million Jews and the 7.5 million Palestinians in Israel/Palestine if both peoples are not able to work out a way to live free, equal, and secure and recognize each other’s right to exist. The security of Jews is dependent on the security of Palestinians and vice versa. Netanyahu and Hamas don’t believe that - for them, it's a zero-sum game; one side has to win, and the other has to be destroyed. The fact that these evil cretins are still in control is why things are the way they are.
