Top Comments: Ironic Political Ad Edition [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-07 By the time people read this diary, this year's general elections will be over. Still, I would like to point out one of the most ironic ads I have ever seen for a local election. As I have stated numerous times, I live in southwestern Nassau County on Long Island. On Long Island there are three levels of municipal governments: County, Town and for some, incorporated villages. Unless you live in an incorporated village that assesses property taxes, the only property taxes you pay are school taxes and county taxes. The Towns do not assess property taxes. Now the town governments do collect fees for almost everything but if you asked a bunch of people on the street how they would classify these, I doubt any would say they are taxes. That leads me to the ad below for the current Town Supervisor, Don Clavin, who used to be the Town receiver of taxes. The ad features him and his daughter washing his car in their driveway. In the ad, the daughter responds to everything he says with "so you are cheap" as describes freezing taxes and cutting spending. What Clavin is trying to do here is take credit for the County government freezing assessments on properties (something Republicans always do which is why we are forever under state scrutiny of our finances). The many years of cutting spending at the Town level (not including all the money that seems to disappear in patronage) has led to dangerous roads, lack of flooding mitigation and recycling pick up where they put regular garbage in the same trucks. I should point out this is the man who took pandemic money out of Nassau County's disbursement to line the pockets of non-essential town employees which he was able to do because of a quirk in the law. It's likely he did it because the county executive at the time was a Democrat whereas he is a Republican. While I and most of you would find this ad both ironic, I'm sure the people it's directed at have no idea how pathetic it makes Don Clavin look. Hilarious you can’t view the ad off YouTube. Must have been because of spending cuts. I hope everyone's elections went the way they wanted. I'm positive mine aren't. Diarist reserves all rights to his original writing only.
