What is a drag Queen? [1]

So this is something that I keep thinking about but I can’t quite put my finger on. You see I hear a lot of strum and dang from those on the right, far right and even further right that apparently Drag queens represent an existential threat to the youth of our country that things such as reading books to children by a drag must be banned and performances must be strictly 18+. But what exactly is drag? I remember as a child watching British pantomime where the lead boy is played by a girl and at least one of the female characters was a make comedian dressed like a woman (think wicked step mother), thing was they were funny, child oriented and no one would ever think of them as a woman.

So what is drag? Men dressed in women’s clothing? I would love to introduce you to Monty Python. Guys in skirts — the Scottish highland regiment would like a word, men with make-up on — tell that to the guy who uses orange tanner, a guy in a ballgown and high heels — try a hunt ball some time it might be better if they shaved.

Seriously if you are going to regulate drag you had better be able to define what it is. I have been to many drag shows and I can assure you that whilst there are those performers who go to great lengths to “Change” their gender there are also those who clearly have not changed far enough to make me believe they are opposite gender, who cares, it is not my responsibility to define, it is up to the bigots and idiots to define drag… and if you can not define it then you can not regulate it.
