To set the scene: Monday was a day off for the kids at school, as we were required to be there for parent teacher conferences. The other choir director and I are in our office when we get a delivery. We FINALLY got a top notch weighted key electronic keyboard so we can travel without the other choir director bringing his own personal equipment. We are giddy as we unpack. I’m sitting in a chair and want to tip the seemingly empty box, realizing that the stand is in there and have it slide out. I bend in the chair. I’m in an awkward position as I try to grab the box and lift the corner. Uh oh. I feel a weird click inside me and then PAIN. Immediately my thoughts ask the question: Can you crack a rib by just bending weird? Cut to Thursday. The pain hasn’t abated, in fact it seems to have increased. On Tuesday or Wednesday I determined to go to urgent care to get a chest X-ray on Thursday. Why Thursday? I had already taken the day off for another reason. So it’s Thursday and our story begins. So at 9am this morning (Thursday) I'm at the wound clinic. Hoping this will be the last visit. Not quite. Even though I am fully healed, the doctor wants me to continue to wear the 2 layer coban compression until my new custom compression arrives. That requires visits to the clinic to get it changed regularly. Fair enough. Then he tells me he wants me to go to lymphedema physical therapy. Ugh. I mentioned the other day (on the Book of Face) that I was going to also go to urgent care because of rib pain. However, since I'm at the hospital anyway, I went to the ER. Because my deductible is fully paid. I get triaged pretty quick because ribs/chest pain and have both an EKG and chest x ray within a half hour or so of checking in. Now we wait. First episode of SVU on the waiting room TV. Doctor comes and pulls me into a more private area. Always a good sign, no? Anyway, it turns out you CAN crack a rib while bending over in a weird position. The X-ray was inconclusive with regards to seeing an actual crack, but it definitely showed no issues with bleeding or lung stuff. He mentions that he’s almost 100% sure I cracked a rib. He also tells me there's an abnormality in my EKG in the right ventricle area--where blood flows to the lungs (Later I do a check and I had this same anomaly back in 2019). He also mentions that he needs to look at the EKG printout itself before making a determination. He tells me he wants to do some blood work that will help detect clots and unusual stuff, and while there's a 95% chance there's nothing wrong, 5% is too high to leave alone. Another SVU episode. The nurses call me into the room where they're prepared to discharge me. I point out the blood work. They look, and sure enough. So I wait 5-10 minutes in the room while they get the supplies. Digression on my veins. My elbow veins are DEEP. She decided to save that one as a last resort, so she sticks my hand. It's a good thing there are two nurses in the room. The first one has to hold her position still as I also have to do in order to get the draw. The other one is exchanging tubes and giving them a shake to prevent coagulation. But we're done. Two more episodes of SVU. FINALLY I'm called back in and in the meantime I've already seen the bloodwork results on MyChart. Plus the pharmacy has sent a message that they're out of the particular pain med prescribed for me. The nurse says she'll get the doctor to talk to me, then I’ll sign the paper and I'm out. 15 minutes later the nurse asks if the doctor has seen me yet and he hasn't. 5 minutes later, he comes in, we talk. Everything with regards to heart/lung action is AOK. He doesn’t mention the EKG specifically, so it seems that I’m good with regards to that as well. I mention the pharmacy is out. He asks me to ask the pharmacist to call him to fix it. I'm finally out. I head to the pharmacy and relay the message. All good, the doctor will send the new script. 20 minutes later the pharmacist says the doctor hasn't sent it, can I check with the doctor. I call the ER, ask the question to the phone person, and she, in a VERY short tone of voice which I absolutely deserved, says that the doctor was caught up with a critical patient and is sending now. I let the pharmacist know, and he goes pale with an "Oh God" of his own. But 5-10 minutes later, I'm FINALLY on the way home. I arrive back at 5:45pm, and finally eat my lunch. And then I take one of the pills as directed. So no driving to rehearsal with the concert a week away. Anyway, how was your day? And on to Tops NOTE: I will be in the comments and reccing later. At the time of publication, I will be finishing a Veteran’s Day concert and collecting my check for that work.
