The Dobbs Conundrum [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-11 (Or how the Right Wing won everything they ever prayed for and doomed the Republican Party.) Every woman in America who either is or has been fertile lives a life dominated by a relentlessly immutable, ticking clock that meters her months. While men may blithely ignore the importance of reproductive health, no woman can. From the onset of puberty, a woman’s future is a repeated term of 28 days, and the ticking clock informs her of her current status. Month after month, year after year, decade after decade, this intimate conversation resonates within every woman. No man in eons of history has experienced bodily subservience to such measuring of his days. Political engagement on this issue will be simple. No woman will need a text, phone call, or an email reminding hereof the importance of preserving her bodily autonomy. Before the detonation of Roe v. Wade, women were generally confident of their reproductive safety and set other priorities for some of their political decisions. But Dobbs lobbed a grenade into that casual certainty, eliciting a groundswell of electoral activism dedicated to reinstating the previous guarantees of Roe. Now, women recognize that without personal control, other concerns are frivolous. The pundit class and the Republicans failed to appreciate the tumultuous shock to the body politic. There is a tradition in American journalism that an issue suddenly spikes in importance, dominates the news cycle, elicits excitable commentary on cable TV, and then reliably fades as soon as the next big thing hews into view. Far from being one of those ephemeral, transitory media events, the assault on Roe has far-reaching impact. The electoral reaction has paralyzed the Republicans and brought them to irrelevance, as there is no supposedly “pro-life” fix that will cause the women of America to bargain away this crucial health care. It is well known that females living in a communal setting unconsciously synchronize their menstrual cycles. Now, for self-preservation, it appears that women have recognized the threat to their secure existence and are synchronizing their votes.
