DK Quilt Guild: Latest quilt and single fold binding [1]

I came across this quilt kit at a quilt guild sale. I liked parts of it and parts were too “dull”, but the main part, the panel and one section of binding, I liked a lot, so I got it. That was 2 years ago.Last year I began this quilt, put it aside and then this year, I finished it. I changed the green border next to the panel because the green that was in the kit was not bright enough. I liked the next border with the pumpkins and writing, but it was supposed to just be straight across. With the writing and such, I didn’t like that. I changed that border to a mitered border, but there wasn’t enough fabric in one piece, so I had to do some piecing, trying to keep the words level and at least close on matching the sentence.

Next there was just supposed to be a bland brown border. Again I wanted something to brighten up the colors. I chose a yellow and didn’t miter it. Last I put a sparkling brown fabric on the last border. My long-arm quilter quilted it with pumpkins, which I asked for.

Now came binding. From watching Pat Sloan, I knew she always did single fold binding. I thought I’d give it a try. According to her instructions here, you cut your binding 1 1/2” and fold one side over 1/4” and press it. Then you apply the binding to the back of the quilt, sewing the unfolded section at 1/4” or just a bit more. Flip it over and make sure the fold touches against the fabric. Now top sew just a bit inside the fold, doing the usual miters at the corners. Part of the benefit of the single fold binding is that the mitering with on one layer of fabric is easier. Pat Sloan suggests a blanket stitch but I preferred a straight stitch. This is what the front looks like.
