Diwali is a festival of lights, like many other festivals in this darker time of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere, of course).

It symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". wikipedia

It is widely associated with Lakshmi and with Ganesha, as well as other deities.

while it is primarily Hindu, some other religions have versions of it, including Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhism.

Feasting and gifts of food are a prominent feature.

animals may join in the dressing up and colorful displays.
