Volunteers needed to help Ukrainians improve their spoken English [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-13 A couple of weeks ago, #captainfactoid highlighted an earlier story by #AnnikaQED about ENGin (enginprogram.org) — an organization that pairs Ukrainian youth with fluent English-speaking volunteers for 1-on-1 English conversation practice: Be proud Kossacks! You are making a difference. A tip of the hat to AnnikaQED The results were outstanding: between the two posts, several dozen KOS members signed up as volunteers, giving a big boost to the program. However, ENGin is still looking for volunteers: several hundred Ukrainians are waiting for “buddies” to be matched with. Can you help? It takes a couple of hours at the beginning for training, an interview, and a short quiz, with a commitment of a minimum of an hour a week for 3 months. However, many ENGin volunteers have enjoyed their experience so much that after a year or more they are still meeting with Ukrainian buddies. Over the next little while I’ll post some personal stories about my own experiences as an ENGin volunteer. Do you have high schoolers at home? You can invite your teens (14+) to have a mind-expanding experience, video chatting with a buddy from a different country and culture. In the US, it is likely that high school students will be able to use their experience volunteering with ENGin towards community service hours required for graduation. And in Canada, the same is true at least for the high school in my home town. Questions welcome! PS: if anyone reading this knows AnnikaQED, would you please ask her to get in touch with me — thanks! PPS: this is my first post on DK. If any of the more experienced DKers have any suggestions for me, please let me know — I’m willing & eager to learn. If it’s an outstanding post in every possible way, you can tell me that too — I won’t complain.
